Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

May I be nosey and ask how many hours LSA support do your ASD dc get?

I will be applying for SA for ds (9) in year 4 with view for transition to secondary. He would need

  1. someone to meet him at beginning of each day with books/timetable etc for the day. He compartmentalises school and home and won't bring anything from school.
  1. someone to take him from class to class
  1. support during lessons as he won't do any work otherwise

4.support to take him to homework club after school and sit with him while he does it.

These needs are evidenced by class teachers, OT and clinical psychologist. An LA EP will be assessing him soon (outside the SA process at my request), and a private ASD salt.

When I add all these up, it comes to at least 35 hours per week LSA support. In primary school support is being offered informally, and with the help of parent volunteers.

I haven't come across anyone receiving 35 hours per week, and wondered if any of your dc have?

Sorry, haven't read the thread yet.

DS2 in Y7 has 15hrs on his statement plus 5 hrs lunchtime support. What he gets is 26 hrs full 1:1 in lessons, a break time and lunch time club that the school run anyway for all the DC with SN. They also run a homework club for those with SN, 3 times a week after school. This is run by the TAs who work in the SN dept. It's fantastic, TBH. He may go down to 20 hrs support in lessons if they have more DC with SN start next year, but they would choose those lessons which DS2 needs less support in. Maybe PE, music, and for him, maths as he's good and keen at maths.

So I think the important thing may be to have a look around the likely secondaries and see what they provide over and above a statement. I know of no DC personally, even those with quite challenging behaviour, who get more than 25hrs on their statement.

Will go back and read the thread, now. Smile

25 hours ta support. Supporting nothing as nothing been done in statement but he has 25 hrs lol

So you already have a secondary in mind. The homework club my DS's school runs is staffed by TAs from the SEN dept, but not at 1:1. But as all the DC in the club have SEN, the TAs just support them all. 1:4 or so seems fine for this. I wonder how your potential secondary school organises homework clubs, lunchtime clubs etc? Definitely worth asking if they do specific SEN ones. My DS has made some 'friends' in his school through these clubs and I'm reassured that he's safe from bullying at those unstructured times.

My DS is 6yo dx with ASD ADHD and DCD awarded 20 hours actually gets 6

HecateTrivia · 06/05/2012 21:38

how the hell has that happened?

If the statement says 20 - they GET 20! And if they don't, you can take action.

moosemama · 06/05/2012 21:43

SOTIRIA, I agree with Hecate, if your ds isn't getting his statemented hours you can go straight to the LEA about it.

peekabooby · 06/05/2012 22:56

ds is 8 and in MS Junior, he gets Zero

bochead · 06/05/2012 23:32

21 hours 1:1 lesson time + 5 hours to cover lunch times. MS juniors.

Though recently he's spending lunchtime alone in the library rather than supported in the playground as per his statement- other famiy stuff going on that prevents me taking on this battle right now, but it'll have to be tackled eventually Sad

Thank you everyone for all your replies, I have no doubt I'll be on this board over the coming months boring everyone pleading for help.

I'll be forever grateful for the day I found MNSN, it helped me immensely with dd and changed me forever. Ds has definitely benefited from my experiences with dd.

Iceflower - It is not too bad at the moment with zero as his teacher accepted my viewpoints on my son at the start of the year when he didn't have a dx. However what will happen with another teacher next year in Y3 could be another matter. He has no friends, is doing OK academically except that writing very difficult.

Are there any others apart from Peekabooby with no hours/statement? Is it going to get much harder going into the KS2?

I agree MNSN has changed the course of DS's life. School would still be treating everything he does as naughty if it weren't for the help I got on here.

SOTIRIA · 07/05/2012 21:44

My DS gets 6 hours 1 to 1 with a 20 hour statement as the school argue that he gets help in small groups from TA or CT. He also has 4 hours home ed.

I had to fight to get DX, statement and 1 to 1. EP came to meeting as a favour as school refused to use one of there slots for him to come.

NHS - had to ask for 2nd opinions as people didn't want to make DX

Statement - had to appeal.

I know lots of us have been through similar. It seems like nothing comes easily. It's sometimes seems survival of the most assertive parent. (maybe I should complain even more) My advice to Iceflower is to describe the support he needs to the Statement panel as clearly as you did to us.

Voidka · 08/05/2012 13:16

DS is in MS reception.

He gets full time 1:1 - 16 hours of this are provided by the LA, 10 by the family of schools and the school makes up the other times.
