I am really happy - all minibaffled's hard work has really paid off. So pleased we went for VT in the end.

whats VT mrsbaffled? :)

whatever it is I am glad you are happy and it paid off :)

Well done.

How is he now?

Ie what problems did the vision therapy and retained reflex therapy cure?

And what problems are left?

Vision Therapy (through a behaviour optometrist) :)

It has cured his eye traking problems. He can now follow my fingers smoothly with his eyes not jumping or looking in completely the wrong places! His peripheral vision has opened up too, so he's not tripping or knocking things over any more.

The RRT part (they do this at the start to suppress the retained reflexes which prevent the eyes developing normally) has helped with general coordination. He no longer fidgets constantly, and hasn't fallen fron his chair in months :) he looks noticeably more coordinated when he runs and is actually quite fast!

He has decided he likes football now and has just started karate at his request - shock!

He still needs to wear his glasses to help with reading, but only really when he's tired. He finds copying easier now and boardwork isn't a problem any more. He can maintain binocular vision on close objects now (without one eye suddenly going in the wrong direction).

He still has poor handwriting and poor spelling, but both are improving. Now the VT is over I will have time to do his finemotor OT with him instead (just one too many things to do)...

Not bad for a few months hard work :)

He still has emotional outbursts, but less often, I think. We are also giving the TH supplements.

Well that is one big list of improvements!

no wonder your happy :)

It was the RRT part of the therapy that helped most. I genuinely think it could help so many more children in so many ways :) It's a shame it's not really widely known about.

MrsB, I am a behavioural optometrist and it gives me great satisfaction when a child improves. Lovely when a child I am seeing suddenly takes to reading when they used to hate it and can take things down from the board without help. Much more satisfying than prescribing specs!

chipmonkey · 16/05/2012 14:15

MrsB, I get a lot of referrals from a lady who does neurodevelopmental therapy and works with the RR. I find those children come on much more quickly with VT as there is not as much for me to do. I generally incorporate both into the "homework".

Yes, as I understand it if there are retained reflexes then the eyes just can't develop and no amount of eye exercises will help. DS spent 3 months doing gross motor/retained reflex therapy and only a few weeks on actual eye 'homework' as the gross motor stuff was enough to allow his eyes to start to develop properly.
