Advice on Ed Psyc issues

I need some advise on what to do, dd1 (Y2) has had lots of issues which ultimately point to both dyslexia and dyscalculia and possiblly some auditory processing issues. These both run in dh family and are acknowledged by dds school Senco as the most likely cause of dds lack of progress and ongoing struggles with even the simplest of tasks. At the end of last term the school, with my support, applied for an Ed Psyc assessment as a first step for Statutory Assessment. Today I have received a letter saying the Panel have met and have referred dd to the Advisory Teacher for Learning for assessment instead. Is this normal? Or is the start of the fobbing off process? TIA

So it sounds like there is no Ed Pysch to see your DD.

Also as your DD will soon start Junior school, she will become their responsibility. Some advisory teachers mean well but their words carry very little weight within an actual school setting so any recommendations can be disregarded.

Have you spoken as yet to the Junior schools SENCO; your DD needs to be on her radar at the very least.

I would see if your GP can refer your DD to a developmental paediatrician if you also think there are auditory processing issues as well. I would also try and get an occupational therapist on board.

Are there any IEPs in existance, is DD on anything like School Action?.

You can personally apply to the LEA for a Statutory assessment aka a Statement. You do not need anyone's permission to do this. IPSEA's website which is www.ipsea.org.uk is helpful with regards to such a process. Be prepared though for the LEA to say no. You can appeal such a decision if the LEA say no.

Thanks Atilla, she has had an IEP since the start of Y1 and was in a small group before that and has been School Action since starting for Speech and Language delay. She is at a primary rather than separate infants so there is no issues with transfer and I can't fault the support she is being given but wanted a formal diagnosis in case the Stamented child in her class (whose TA she piggybacks) leaves and in preparation for secondary. I should add that I am a secondary teacher so have experience of the other side of the process but not the actual applying.
There are EP who could see her and I will be asking the Senco why she isn't seeing one when I go in to her school tomorrow. She needs to see the EP to start the Statement process, i think, which was the reason for the referral. I read the referral and that is what the school requested but I will make an appointment with our GP too.

I'd cut straight through all this unnecessary 'applying to a Panel to decide whther you get an Ed Pysch assessment' nonsense.

It's just a very unsubtle form of rationing that does nothing to help you DD.

Just make your own application for an assessment that may lead to a Statement of SENs directly to the LA.

If they agree to proceed with the assessment, part of the process will be an Ed Pysch assessment.

You need to read the SEN COP very carefully.
