Armani gives £40k to DS charity

So what if it IS a PR stunt. He has decided, after spending time with a little girl from Rome who has DS that he won't be giving fashion editors expensive Xmas pressies this year but will instead give £40k to the Down's syndrome Educational Trust. Come on all you other wealthy individuals who throw money around - take a leaf out of Armani's book and give to a worthy charity.

I agree, it doesn't matter if it's a PR stunt. Let's hope it becomes the new fashion (and one that sticks)

ThomCat · 01/12/2003 12:03

ha ha - pardon the pun aye Salt - 'the new fashion' - very good

KS - that's a great idea - how lovely.

There's a huge piece in the Sunday Telegraph all about it. It has the Xmas card that Armani will be sending out instead of the hugely expensive gifts and it's a picture of him and this beautiful little girl that has inspired him to donate to the DS Educational Trust (God she really is stunning). There is also a picture of th lovely Paula Sage who stars in Afterlife and also has DS, she was also an inspiration to Armani. So the guy gets half a page in The Telegraph and maybe it is in the name of PR, but whatever! I think it's wonderful and hope other designers etc follow suit.
(ohhh pardon the pun!!!!!!!! )

This is fab, is there anyway we can do a link to the story as I'm now a bit late for the Sunday Telegraph ?

ThomCat · 01/12/2003 14:04

try this

Really great news. The way he comes across is genuine. he's really thought about this and IMO it's no publicity stunt - good on him

WSM · 01/12/2003 14:12

Thanks for that Thomcat. What a fab photograph, Antonella lights up the picture. I think that some of the fashionistas quoted in that piece seemed VERRRRRRRY cynical and a bit bitter (no snazzy handbag this year ). Whatever his reasons, the outcome is still the same, a worthy cause has benefitted from his generous donation both from a financial and a PR P.O.V and will continue to do so in the future.

coppertop · 01/12/2003 14:23

Yes, the anonymous fashion writer seemed VERY bitter. Does he/she think the charities really care which part of the budget it came from??? What a great piece of news. Not sure about all these fashion puns though. Or is this just skirting the issue....

Agree that this is a great idea and I hope others can follow suit. And what a beautiful child!

ThomCat · 01/12/2003 17:01

Oh coppertop - that's dreadful!!!

I know - stupid woman/man- discussing budgets and such nonsense when the fact is that a charity is receiving a much needed and appreciated £40k - yeah read it and weep fashion ed bitch/bastard!!!!!!

Hi Thomcat, I hoped you'd see the article. I never buy the Sunday Telegraph but did this week and thought you'd love the story and the absolutely stunning photograph of Antonella. I think the PR is really as vital as the money - there are so many misconceptions about DS and if the glamour or Armani takes the fear factor out of DS for people and makes them rethink their view of people with DS then that's as important as cash in many ways, surely. I gather from the story that it was his personal contact with this little girl that made him adopt the charity.
BTW some of fashion editors are, by normal people's standards incredibly ungrateful for their hundreds of gifts. They simply don't want them and give them away. Even so, I'm sure 99per cent of them would be very, very happy to forgo a gift if the money went to charity. Most are human beings too, often with children of their own.

ThomCat · 01/12/2003 17:57

Hi Aloha - how are you lovely?
Absolutley - to have a face like Armani linked to DS may really make some of the more fickle people out there think twice - it's all good and everyone's a winner, apart from the fashion editors!

thanks for posting this ThomCat, it's such good news for DownsEd who are always strapped for cash and do such wonderful work and also for all people with DS to have awareness raised in such a 'chic' way with beautiful photos etc. Agree that it really doesn't matter if it's a PR stunt - the more PR the better, really. And it is a large sum of money so why shouldn't Armani get PR for doing it?!
