DD - difficulty processing information?

Hi all. My DD's teacher asked to see me and told me DD seemed to have difficulty processing information sometimes. He said she takes a long time to react to instructions. Also that she sometimes became anxious if routines changed. He advised me to get her hearing tested and also wants the SENCO to observe her next week. At the same time, she is very high functioning, probably top of her class.
He wouldn't tell me what sort of problem he thought she had, and I'm worrying a lot. If I had a label, I could do some research. Any clues? Thanks a lot.

Yes get her hearing tested. Don't do it privately (i.e. in an opticians) as the rooms won't be sound proofed. You will need to get a referral to an NHS Audiologist. Has she had a heavy cold recently? That can impact on your eustachian tube by swelling. The teacher can make some changes by making sure she is at the front of the class. Is her vision ok? Sometimes when you are concentrating to focus, you don't always tune in at the same time ifyswim.

Hi LouLou. You may find that the hearing test comes back ok but your dd still has difficulty processing info.

DS's test with an audiologist came back OK but he is believed to have Auditory Processing Disorder (APD). We haven't pursued this too much as we have been looking at his other difficulties for the moment. He seems to hear all sounds at the same level so he struggles to focus on the teacher if there is chatter or a fan on etc etc

That's interesting, thanks. Will look it up.

My DS is 7 and also has difficulty with auditory processing. He struggles to follow any instructions more than 2 steps and he has a lot of difficulty with certain problem solving subjects e.g maths. The school have worked a great deal with him one to one and he is making progress with a lot of effort! My DS is very imaginative and creative but this can run hand in hand with APD apparently.

Has an IEP been suggested?
