Someone (sorry can't remember who) recently posted a comment about how good this book is. Can she (or anyone else) give me any more details about it? It costs £32.95 on Amazon so need to know!!

I've not seen it myself but I'm sure that someone on another forum said that their library was able to order it for them to borrow. Might be worth a try.

as an aside - dh and I did the hanen programme - but we did the one it takes two to talk.... it is amazing to see how much more communicative dd1 is and how much easier it is to understand her - she is using a lot more vocab and attempts to say more words.

Her signing is still improving in leaps and bounds. We also find we are using the strategies with dd2 who has more vocab and is able to communicate better than any other babes her age that I know.

Obviously it is not a short term wonder fix and some it is common sense but it does work.

Hi

You can order the book direct from :

www.winslow-cat.com/cgi-bin/winslow.storefrontthis

in fact they have all the hanen books and the video...but its way too pricey.

Thanks everyone - will try library and our SLT (though not much hope there - think she's in a bit of a mood with me because I disagreed with her at our Family Services Meeting...)
Definitely need ideas for moving on with DS2 - he will say words when prompted by rhymes or songs and sometimes comes out with single words spontaneously (but not often). Prefers to communicate by roar!

I borrowed a copy from my HV and have read the first chapter and a half, and flicked through the rest. There's nothing in it that's 'rocket science', but I find the ideas seem sensible and are well presented with plenty of examples. It seems both easy to understand and use, and also non-trivial. It divides children up into four bands, depending on level of communication, and gives suggestions for each band, so it covers a wide range of experience. Lots of chapters on introducing visual helpers, on observing your child's communication and on developing them from their current skills, on using music and songs.

As Tobysmumkent says, probably many things you're doing anyway, and many things that would be useful with any child (as eisvold says about using with DD2).

Personally, I felt it was too pricey to buy, esp without having seen it first. Your local library probably won't have a copy in, but they will be able to borrow it in for you on inter-library loans, so ask them to do this. If you think you'll refer to it again and again, then buy.

Your local speech therapy department will have a copy. Ask to borrow it and photocopy it. Its pretty basic stuff though, and you could just go through it and jot down the important bits.

Have answered you in the ABA thread about More Than Words but could wax lyrical about it as I think it'a a great book. It was the first thing I read that really described my son's problems and the first intervention that I felt would really suit him.

I bought mine from Winslow using DS's DLA money though I think some SALT will lend them out. Have you gone on the NAS Earlybird course? As part of that they cover the Hanen approach, not as comprehensively as the book but it's a good opportunity to see it used practically. Earlybird is also free!
