Thoughts on ipads?

Ds1 has just seen my bro's new ipad.

He, of course, loves it.

Its his 9th birthday in 6 weeks and he was going to ask family members for money towards a kindle. And horse riding lessons

I think he now wants an ipad Grin

Are they suitable for a 9 year old? What can they do? Are they worth the money? Is it also an e reader?

I dont mind putting some money towards it as long as he realises he will have to let his little bro use it occasionally too!

Thoughts?

OMG have just seen the prices!

Oh well....perhaps we can save up. I like the idea of the apps for handwriting, matsh etc. He likes angry birds Smile

dd3(6) has one, she got funding from the family fund, she can't access the home computer independently at all. Despite being sceptical of all the hype it's been absolutley fab for her, much better than we expected and she can do all sorts without needing any help at all from us. There's a kindle app you can get and dd3's came with ibooks as well which is pretty similar, we didn't get one with massive memory and it's been fine but I know it's usually recommended you get one with a bigger memory, it's also worth forking out on a decent case!

silverfrog · 28/04/2012 17:06

absolutely worth it, as long as you buy a decent case too (accidents happen, and are expensive!) - I would recommend Otterbox Defender series.

dd1 has one - we fundraised for it at ehr last school, and so it is hers (she did the 5km run too, so did work for it!). othrwise it would have been mine

Becaroooo · 28/04/2012 17:46

hmmm...my nephews have ipod touches and the screen is very small isnt it? Think he would be better with the larger screen Hmm

Its such a lot of money if he doesnt use it and then I can see ds2 being a real pita about it...

OTOH I could use it when ds1 is at school/in bed - result! Smile

My DS is nearly 3, SD, and could not point until he got his iPad, now he knows how to point (and does it all the time). For that alone I am so grateful for the iPad!

theDudesmummy · 28/04/2012 17:50

Sorry that should have said ASD not SD

Becaroooo · 28/04/2012 17:55

They are fab arent they?

Sigh.

I was sort of hoping someone would come on and say "oh dont bother they're pants" but its not going to happen is it?

Seems daft buying a kindle when he could get an ipad which does so much more and is an e reader too?.....

Not going to say its pants here either! There are some brilliant - and cheap apps. New Apps are coming out all the time as well.
DS3 has one (4) and it has really helped him get phonics and letter shapes and all sorts.
I have also used apps as bribery incentives - at 69p - its a really cheap option Grin

IndigoBell · 28/04/2012 18:42

They're pants.

It took me a long time to fall in love with mine :)

There's an annoying amount of things you can't do on it. (like cut and paste! And see any site that uses flash!)

You can use it as a kindle. And I get DD to do her spellings on it.

But besides that - I only really use it for MN. And even then if I want links in my post I often go to my PC.

I really don't think it's worth the money.

I think you should get him a kindle if you want an expensive present - or a tablet which isn't an iPad.

Triggles · 28/04/2012 19:25

We thought briefly about an Ipad for DS2, however, a friend of ours as well as DD were stating that it does have some limitations that can be annoying. So what we did was gave DS2 our old laptop when we got a new one. We got a nice top sticker (Lightning McQueen) for the top, and he's allowed to go online on it, but only with supervision. He's thrilled to have his own laptop and is certainly not fussed that it's not fancy. It worked much better for us this way - and we don't have to stress over him damaging it nearly as much!

BehindLockNumberNine · 28/04/2012 19:31

According to apple you can now cut and paste???

IndigoBell · 28/04/2012 19:33

You can cut and paste sometimes. But it only works in certain things.

Curry's online - they start at £130.

I suspect they'll do pretty much everything an iPad does.....

Becaroooo · 28/04/2012 21:01

ooohhh...thanks indigo

DH has a cheap android tablet. He didn't go for the cheapest of the cheap, but got a Cube tablet which can be bought off ebay for about £170 (he bought his direct from china for a little less)

And it does Flash.

Becaroooo · 29/04/2012 09:10

hmm..better get looking!
thanks all
