I know keep calm everyone keeps saying it wont be long before he is out of there but.....

We have worked out some great OT ideas and together with me saying he will never have to do the morning excercises again in busy hall DS has been to school on time. Has walked into class by main door which is another difficult feat and has sat at his desk. Have asked school to work with me and have a plan of action for when ds arrives so he has something to look forward to. No his TA is reading with another child but nevertheless DS still went in. I am proud of him this week. :)

Its SATS isnt it. Maths he has done brilliant effort and managed 3 challenges, taken sats mock and did well. He loves maths.

Cant write, read. Can copy off board as to him he says it is copying pictures. Cannot for the life of him write from memory. Has fine motor issues with writing, reading cannot cope with phonics. Can write his name. They insist he can write and just wont do it.

This week is literacy for sats. They are reading out a sentence and he has to write it. They have given him time outs for it. They have given him loss of playtime for it, they have given him 10 mins before he can have lunch for it.

I get a phone call he is excluded for two days for non compliance of tasks and behaviour towards staff. He basically hid in the loo and ran for it.

What was it about writing. They are doing no sensory work, still havent been on workshop, still not called in Outreach team and still think that he needs to comply with being shut in a class all day and must comply with tasks requested. Still no proper playground 1 to 1 and if he doesnt come in he forfiets play wait for it.........for the week.

I am pissed

Shock and Angry

Thats awful and quite probably an illegal exclusion.

coff33pot · 26/04/2012 19:58

Two days! for not writing a sentence!!! ffs not violence, not attacking (which he doesnt) not abuse. He is 6 and just cant write Angry

Dont think ive read about it on here before, but whats the background? do you have somewhere else lined up for him?

It is illegal to exclude because of behaviors related to a disability though [or words to that effect]

mrsbaffled · 26/04/2012 20:05

That's shocking! Shows a really lack of understanding of his issues :(

coff33pot · 26/04/2012 20:05

He went with the makings of a cold coming. I had to take eldest dd for MRI results. I get a call asking to collect and I said I am miles away and explained.

Got told 11.30 that he is ok now he was unsettled but had a chat. So I asked them to perhaps let him go to the quiet library and maybe use another medium for perhaps writing or something as it is much better than me collecting and him learning that I will come running.

I got a NO I have told him you are coming and he needs to know you are picking him up.

I get there at 1.15 and he has been shut in HT office colouring in. Ok no problem with that. I get handed a letter re exclusion. He is hot as hell with a sore throat but still quiet. Get told we are excluding him for two days.

That is awful! Total over reaction from school. Your poor DS and you. Sounds an awful school.

Sure others will have good advice but am angry on your behalf.

AmberLeaf · 26/04/2012 20:10

Has this happened before? do they call you a lot to come and get him?

Ive heard this all before, its what they do IMO to 'hound you out'

coff33pot · 26/04/2012 20:13

sorry x post will explain
He is due to go juniors sept. Has a statement 25 hrs. recent dx as/adhd (concentration)/scd/tourettes/sensory P disorder

statement will be amended once report in. Had his statement dec and none of it implemented. Got meeting LA/OT/EP and staff. He has had 1 to 1 but not experienced in SN (although lovely and I feel sorry for her)

At meeting they were told to arrange full sensory workshop course by LA and OT insisted they go as she cannot train them due to them not understanding any childs sensory needs. LA told them to get in Outreach team or poss visit SS and gain better understanding. None done.

Advised to find somewhere quiet for him to go. They say there is no where even though admitted class to small for quantity of children. DS actually wants time out he says because he can go away and think (he calms down he means)

They are so adamant about the compliant side of things its unreal.

He is 7 soon but although he sounds older in language he is still 4yr old inside iyswim

You send the exclusion letter to the lea + the chairman of the governors stating that you would like a face to face meeting to discuss this illegal exclusion and the schools failure to comply with the disability discrimination act as evidenced by:-

1/ Lack of understanding over your child's inability to access the curriculum resuting in him being punished & not supported
2/no 1:1
3/Stil no staff training despite repeated requests.

(Excluding a 6 year old is seen as a sign of school failure - NOT the child's by ptb esp now you have an alphabet of diagnoses) The school has essentially F$&*ked up and you are now in a position to DEMAND they get things sorted.

As a result you will eiither be appying for a statement forwith or asking for an early annual review. This is actually FANTASTIC evidence so work it gal like a drag queen in lycra for all it's worth Wink

IPSEA do model letters. PLease don't fret but my 6 year old's exclusion was when the tide started to turn for us - I just didn't see it at the time.

You poor ds :( they sound like a bunch of wankers! Any chance you can HS until you move him? Poor little man. That's total discrimination.

coff33pot · 26/04/2012 20:17

They had him PT amber and continuously called me till I put my foot down as agreement was once statement issued he would be FT.

I have a meet on monday to review how things have gone. The LA will be there and the junior school are invited the OT cant make it but is furious that he has been excluded and will email LA on my behalf.

Never mind DS non compliance what about the schools non compliance grrrrrrr!

I would all ACE This is a specific advice line for exclusion. I have always found them alot clearer and more proactive on the legal side of things than IPSEA

appropriatelyemployed · 26/04/2012 20:20

I would call ACE that should say

coff33pot · 26/04/2012 20:21

Thanks AT I will give them a ring. It does say on the exclusion letter that I can appeal to governors so thanks for the advice Bochead :)

Sour grapes for getting a dx

AmberLeaf · 26/04/2012 20:25

ACE were great with a friend of mine, they went to meetings with her for support.

Its really bad Coff33pot Sad

pleasegivemestrength · 26/04/2012 20:28

how awful :( your poor ds! His school sounds as awful as my ds1's previous nursery - where I had to pick him up early on a near daily basis and none of mine or OT's suggestions were taken on board. that was all pre-diagnosis so I am Shock your school is treating your ds like this despite diagnosis, statement etc... good luck!

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 26/04/2012 20:28

They are such a waste of space, that f**king school. You, on the other hand, have the patience of a saint. Can't really add to the advice, luckily I've never had those problems, but appropriate and Bochead have, so I'd go with them. ((((hugs)))) Hope he's feeling better soon.

coff33pot · 26/04/2012 21:02

Sorry had to rush and get DD from scouts :)

Well they are trailing it out till summer that much is obvious. He needs playtime 1 to 1 as in statement and pooh pooed that they have to find the funding. They already have 25 hours and that is our la limit and the la have told them they must fund the rest.

TA is upset and I am angry that she has had to suffer the strain due to their refusal to take anything on board. Its not fair on her either and it makes me so mad as she has a great repor with DS but she is being told by the teacher one way and its the wrong way. And they are not helping this woman by giving her no training either.

On a positive note the Juniors have already got a TA, invited me to meet her, she is being trained by their SN TA now but also said any courses recommended they will send her on. They have already rang OT to do to their course and have bought language for thinkng and said they will buy him a laptop. Invited me to a social stories workshop that the teachers were going to which was interesting and helpful. Also has said between now and Sept DS can come visit after school and play in the rooms as many times as he likes to get used to them. Openly said they made errors in a previous transition with an AS child because they didnt know anything and didnt want to get it wrong this time. So I guess that is a silver lining and maybe his education will start there :)

Coff33, the juniors situation has improved, somewhat! They were being awkward last I heard. Did your LA lady beat some sense into them? I can't believe the infant school, though. Talk about washing their hands of him. He doesn't deserve this treatment. I hope karma comes and bites them all on the arse.

Ineedalife · 26/04/2012 21:11

Ffs coff, that is awful, your poor ds.

It is sad that he is being treated like that, although nothing surprises me anymore.

The juniors sounds promising but how upsetting tue the infants havent even tried.Sad

coff33pot · 26/04/2012 21:14

Ellen My mother has had enough and just said she is coming to the meeting with me trust me....................she bites Grin What better a person that your trainer in life :)

Yes the Juniors took me by surprise! They even said they will fund the extra for wrap around care somebody somewhere has had a word I think!
