recommendations for GF bread?

we started DD recently on a GF diet (casein did not show up as a problem so she can have that) after sunderland test.

I am having really trouble finding some nice GF bread. DD won't eat any of the breads we have bought so far. just spits them out. can't blame her, it tastes (and feels) pretty awful.

are there any breads you could recommend?

thanks

My dad eats this and apparently Warburtens brown bread with seeds is good too.
Waitrose has quite a few different types if you are near one, as does tesco - some people really like "genius" but Dad didn't - think it is a matter of taste.
Oh and it goes stale super fast. you need to freeze it and get the slices out as you need them.

I like Sainsbury's own fresh loaves, the nearest i've found to fresh bread so far....

chocjunkie · 24/04/2012 10:13

thanks,

Genius was a total fail here.
haven't looked at tesco's. will maybe do me friday shopping there

and thanks Em, will check out the sainsbury's won fresh loaves.

Neither ds1 or my mum like Genius, but both like Tesco's Free From Fresh. Its like a little 400g loaf, not the horrible vacuum packed stuff.

IndigoBell · 24/04/2012 13:59

we just cut out bread totally. It all tastes awful.

But, once we got lunch sorted, we never had a problem with no bread.......

(For lunch DS has babybell, salami, cucumber, tomatoes & fruit)

Just a suggestion - www.freefromfoodawards.co.uk/winners-12.html . Fria won their bread award. I remember trying some from last year's allergy show and thinking it was quite OK. I don't think I'll ever taste one that I think is brilliant.
Fria's chocolate torte - another one of their winners - is to die for though Grin

Sorry, forgot to link

alison222 · 24/04/2012 14:09

Blush at my link - obviously the cut and paste didn't work - try this.
Also I have been told that in general the brown breads are better than the white as they have more flavour - do others find this too?

keepingupwiththejoneses · 24/04/2012 14:13

Sainsburys fresh loaf here too. Much more like real bread than any other.

auntevil · 24/04/2012 14:15

Cutting bread is fine - as long as the carbs are put back into the diet in another form.
Apparently this is a big issue with child coeliacs - as carbs are a major source of energy - hence why its on prescription - to avoid parents from reducing the levels too much

schobe · 24/04/2012 14:16

My DS likes most types but only toasted with loads of butter. Also eggy bread seems acceptable with my secret ingredient (orange flavoured fish oil - may as well kill two birds with one stone!)

I think the soft brown seeded Sainsbury's loaf is the best/softest one I've found so far.

He also likes gluten free breadsticks, don't know if you've tried them.

chocjunkie · 24/04/2012 15:34

wow, thanks for all the tips Thanks

will also have a go at the choclate tart Smile

Warburtons for us, much nicer than any others we tried

moosemama · 25/04/2012 17:52

I have never seen Warburtons for sale anywhere round here. Where is everyone buying it?

sazza76 · 25/04/2012 18:08

They sell it in Asda, Waitose and some Morrisons. Trouble is that its hard to find in the shop! Its never with the rest of the Gluten free bread or food. In Asda its with the bread. Its a small loaf, they do white or brown. I think its worth tracking down if you can. I always keep a spare on in the freezer.

moosemama · 25/04/2012 18:51

Thanks sazza76, we don't have an Asda. We do have a Waitrose, but not all that local and we don't shop there because it's £££s. There is a Morrisons in town, so might have a look there next time I'm in town.

We keep the freezer stocked with ds1's bread, I start to fret if we get below 3 loaves. Blush

sazza76 · 25/04/2012 19:17

It's a pain that Sainsburies and Tesco don't stock it, I guess its because they do their own!

LargeLatte · 25/04/2012 20:37

I have adapted to Genius bread but have found most of the GF breads taste like talcum poweder and just prefer to go with alternative carbs - gluten free crackers and pasta I can hardly tell the difference. And I make my own gluten free scones and cakes.

Will have a crack at the Sainsbury's stuff next time I send dh there / do an online order.
