Particularly as a stand alone diagnosis and not connected to adhd or anything else ?

Ds (9) has just recieved this diagnosis, although the psych we saw said he didn't really like to give it a name, but that's what it was.

They said he wasn't on the autistic spectrum at all, and that all of the smaller issues he had like obsessions with thnings, was within a normal range.

I do agree with the ODD disgnosis, but i'm not sure it is just that though. They said he didn't have adhd because he's not hyperactive. What about ADD though ?

They are reffering him back to cahms for more behavioural therapy, which is mostly them telling me what to do, but has helped a little bit.

I also want to get him tested for auditory processing disorder, as I am sure he has this, but i need to go back to my gp for a referal i think.

I think I did look at that a while ago when it was mentioned on someone elses thread.

IIRC it did fit.

Will take another look.

ODD and PDA (and ASD) all suggested at diffrent times for ds1.

he has an adhd dx now.(ADD)

to be absolutely honest, there is so much overlap between them all, that you might as well just concentrate on what you/ he needs to support the difficulties he has, whatever they are called. a diagnosis of any of the above will help with paperwork, but it won't matter which dx he has in terms of support (or lack of it).

i'm fully expecting ds1's dx to chop and change.

I agree with madwoman about all the overlap between these disorders/conditions.

Someone on here said think of it as a signpost instead of a label. The signpost is to point people in the right direction to support your ds.

No advice sorry i just wanted to share that.

Be kind to yourself and give yourself some time to let it sink in.

Good luckSmile.

nut, did the psych actually do a full battery of tests? do any assessments at all to rule in or out add? i assume if he came out bog standard average on conners etc then he would be hard put to come up with an add dx. to rule it out on the basis of no hyperactivity means diddly squat for inattention. two completely different things.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 23/04/2012 18:44

Thank's all Smile

All the psych did was to speak to me and ds for an hour. He asked me alot about ds as a baby and that was about it.

Tbh atm I cant see what difference knowing this will make, as school are crap with him anyway. Plus his problems at school are different to at home. In school it is more about his lack of attention and at home it is more about his anger issues etc.

I am definitely going to persue the APD test though, as I am certain that there is something stopping him from processing information and retaining information.

he needs proper testing, tbh. wechsler testing will give you some clues about processing, too, but if there are concerns about inattention then conners etc will be useful.

ds's full dx is adhd with some aspergers traits (not enough for full dx - sensory and social) and anxieties and phobias. and yes, his temper is something to behold at home. in school mostly just inattentive.

i don't think there is a particular apd test for diagnosis, is there? (one of the reasons why it is so little discussed?)

Hmm i'm not sure hw to access anymore testing tbh. Will look into that some more.

With the APD as far as i know there is testing for it, which is like a hearing test, but is looking for different things. Only certain audiologists do it and i've yet to find out where I could take ds, even privately, which tbh i can;t afford anyway.

I'm moving house next week, but as soon as that done, i'm going to see the gp about a referal for adp.

Having a hellish couple of days with ds, and his dad makes things so much worse because he doesnt believe in things like ODD, ADHD etc. Thankfully, he doesn't live with us.

lol, sorry. i got my wires crossed, i was still talking about pda, like we were at the start of the thread, not apd. Grin

yes, there are tests for apd. don't think there are for pda though.
