What tics do your DC have?

I was watching Louis thing last night on Autism and Joey (the one they kept restraining) did something with his head and neck that our DS2 does. It's like rolling his head from one side to the other whilst shrugging his shoulders and looking slightly into the air. It was so surreal to see Joey do it. Dr has just said nothing to worry about, dismisses my worries about ASD as usual 'all men (yes just men apparently) are on the Autistic Spectrum'.

Do any of your DC do this, or what other ones have you noticed? DS2 also clicks his elbows by straightening them out really quickly until they click.

Mine does a thing with his jaw - sort of mouthing when he is watching TV or playing a game.

coff33pot · 20/04/2012 17:17

Yes mine does the Joey thing occasionally when he is concentrating on a game or tv programme. He also clicks his fingers and puts his chin on his chest and then moves his head in a circle, rolls eyes into head, throat clears, back of throat clicking, raises eyebrows quite high then down to a frown bit like a facial grimace. Occasionally a high pitched scream for no apparent reason or a roar. Flexes and shakes his hands.

All not at one mind this is a list over the last 4 years that just started off with throat clearing. One replaces the other every few weeks or so or it dies down then builds up again under stress or tiredness.

He was dx with vocal and motor tics

My ds does the same as Joey too, he also thumps his chest a lot, has high pitched scream a lot, back of throat clicking and twists his feet constant. He has recently been diagnosed with tourettes movement tic disorder, as well as catatonia in autism. Already has dx of severe autism, GDD, low muscle tone & pica.

I am confused by the tic and stim tbh. It has been explained to me before but I still don't get it.

I know his bouncing from foot to foot is a stim but he wriggles his fingers a lot and I don't know if it is a stim or tic. He also puts his chin to his chest, stretches his neck, stretches his eyes, nose scrunches and grimaces. He has an occasional one that involved putting his hand in his hair, a bit like Laurel and hardy, which one is which?

He doesn't have any vocal tics. they lessen in the holidays and at times of stress, even if its something he likes ,such as theme parks he tics constantly.

Dd has many odd movements, she has a nose scratch, nose twitch, a 'fidget with knickers' , a piercing scream that she seems to have randomly started doing for no reason, she does Tue elbow thing as.well

DS2 stims a lot, mostly jumping up and down and flapping his arms from his elbows, also runs back and forth down the hall, banging against the front door and running back. I think his are all sensory seeking stims, not involuntary tics, though.

amistillsexy · 21/04/2012 14:18

DS1 likes to make pronouncements and talks to us as if he were making a speach. This is when his tics are most noticable, and he has done many, including blowing quickly out every two or three words (like blowing a candle out), and making a soft 'b' sound with his lips (like a goldfish) every couple of words. He also spends much of every morning making random noises whilst he plays.
It reminds me very much of what I have seen in people with Terrettes (sp?) Syndrome. Are they related, does anyone know?

flowwithit · 21/04/2012 14:37

My Ds sometimes has one or more of the following,
throat clicking, eye blinking, mouth stretching, head nodding, head shaking hand flicking.
It changes and seems to be worse during stressful times. Sometimes it will be one of those like head shaking or nodding that will last for a month or two then it goes.

coff33pot · 21/04/2012 14:52

Best thing to do? Ignore the Doc and request go to developemental pead instead. Video your child on your mobile or something small so that they are unaware you are doing it (I just said I was trying to get my phone to sort itself out) over a period of a couple months or so on all the things you transpire to be a tic.

This is what I did over a 12 month period to prove continuity.

Its hard explaining it all to someone verbally so it helps your concerns to be considered with videos.

Teeth grinding, sniffing, throat clearing, whistling, raspberry blowing, rolling his eyes into the top of his head and more recently, a sort of hand flick that's accompanied by a form of beatboxing!

nothinginthefridge · 22/04/2012 22:42

We're due back at the developmental pead at the beginning of May, so thanks coff33pot I will video him on my mobile to show her. I've also got CAMHS coming in May, so I'll show them as well.
