We're seeing the Ed Physch next week, what questions should we be asking??

I finally feel like we've been listened to, the school have been gathering evidence in preparation to see the Ed Physch. But now it's finally happened I don't know what we should be doing. Confused

Plus, I don't really know what outcome to expect, a diagnosis? Statement??

It's a long time coming, DS goes up to secondary school in September so a crucial time...

I would welcome any advice / tips that you have!

TIA

Where is your DS at the moment, on school action? If he sees the ed psych that will become school action plus. So the EP will be assessing him to give the school advice on how best to support him. If you feel the school won't be able to adequately support him with their own resources then you should be asking for Statutory Assessment. What does the school think? The EP should advise on whether they think SA is appropriate after they have assessed him, but remember that they are employed by the LA and are not impartial. Statements cost money.

An EP can't give a medical DX, they may say Dyslexia, or specific learning difficulty as it's now known.

From the start of statutory assessment to getting a statement is a minimum of 6 months, so if that's what is needed, sooner, rather than later to get some support in place for the start of secondary.

Hi Ellen, yes he is on School Action, despite meetings last Easter where I was told they were moving him on to Action Plan Plus. I'm not sure whether he needs to be statemented, he certainly needs support in the classroom because he finds the work ie reading/writing/numeracy so much of a struggle (science he isn't actually that far behind with)

Our Ed Phsych is not employed by the LA, they are now employed by the school, it's all changed in our county so I hope that's for the better.

The SEN at the secondary school has already been in touch to invite DS for an induction afternoon... I'm still debating whether he actually needs to go to an additional induction afternoon but thats a whole other thread!

Thanks for replying....
