Statement Question

I have applied for a statement for my dd who has VI, she has a diagnosed condition. The letter I have received which says they are going to go ahead and assess her for a statement says she will need to see a 'medical officer'. Does anyone know what this entails and if this is a doctor?

My DS had to see a doctor who was employed by the LA in addition to reports from his own NHS paed for his Statutory Assessment. It was a formality in our case, but makes you wonder if they don't trust the NHS paeds to say what the LA want to hear! Hmm

This is exactly what I was thinking as well. Why would they get a medical officer when she has been diagnosed by a professor with a speciality in her condition!

I think it's a formality. No MO is going to contradict an eminent professor!

Perhaps some LA's have this system for every assessment as a formality. My ds was statemented by a different LA and he did not have to have this

Its standard procedure.

My ds is also under a local paed, but had to see another one, from the same team, as a formality for SA. She had a quick chat with us, weighed and measured ds and had a brief chat with him and that was that.

It is standard procedure and I was extremely glad he went to see that particular paed. She picked up on other things that had been missed in other assessments, and which in the end made a lot of sense when trying to 'figure out' where my son is coming from.

DD didn't actually have to see a medical officer the Paed just filled in a form and submitted it. DD had only seen the Paed about 4 months previously so I'm not sure if this may have been why she didn't have to have a medical.
