I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this disorder, my son was diagnosed over a year ago after being referred by the school. He bounces round the house and makes a buzzing noise almost constantly at home but can usually stop himself at school, however recently he's been told off for disrupting the class with his noise . He's come home very upset and has been saying he wants to stop but he can't , I've no idea how to help him and the consultant just said hopefully he'd grow out of it . Has anyone any ideas on how I can help him ?

Well, with some children who have similar stereotypies but due to a different dx, such as autism or ADHD, or whatever, trying to replace the activity with a less intrusive behaviour for the rest of the class/ room can work. So if it's the buzzing at school, it's possible he does it to separate himself from the auditory excesses of the environment, so maybe headphones / iPod would work, if it's a motor thing that the sensory stimulation on his mouth from the buzzing fulfils, then maybe a chewy tube (p's and q's or similar) would help. Or just experiment with a dynaband on the chair legs to push against, wobble cushion, anything that might alter the one intrusive behaviour into a different one that is more manageable in the school environment.
