I think you can ask the school to get a specialist teacher or Educational Psychologist in to observe or assess dc. If the teacher is spotting some differences from the majority which need to be better understood then they can get experts in to help shed some light on what dc finds easy and what he finds tricky.

If they have to pay for any of these, they have a budget to pay for it, so it I would start with that.

As an alternative, if you have just won the lottery or had a windfall, you can get independent reports - and an Educational Psychologist is a fairly sensible place to start.
