SALT provision - it's in our statement so what do I do if DD2 doesn't get it?

DD2 has twice weekly SALT, it's specified and quantified and is delivered directly by a SALT therapist once a week, and a SALT assistant once a week.

I found out today the SALT had her last session with DD2, there is to be no handover and her TA isnt aware of a new one starting. I've left a message for the SALT to call me as next week she is writing her report for DD2's annual review so I want to know what she's recommending, but I also want to know who will take over and why there won't be a handover.

It has taken months for her to get to know DD2 and now we'll have to start again, and probably have to go backwards before we can go forwards IYKWIM.

If SALT doesn't call me (which is likely), who can I go to?

I'm livid at the moment, all that blood sweat and tears to get the statement right and they don't deliver anyway.

TIA

If it is in the statement then the LA are responsible for ensuring that the provision in it is met.

I would suggest starting gently with the SENCO at school, then ringing the SEN department at the LA to get a name, ask them to find out then confirm your conversation in writing with a date they can get back to you.

I think you need to talk to someone to find out exactly what it "last session" means. Is it just the sessions with the SALT that have ended and (s)he has handed it over to the SALT assistant to continue or has it all stopped? Maybe she has put programmes in place for the school to follow?

Thank you alison and starfish.

It's not DD2's last session, just her SALT moving on which I'm not too bothered about. I called the SALT dept today and they assured me DD2 won't be going without. DD2 is in a sn centre, so the other children in the class also have SALT too.

I still want to speak to the SALT though to see what provision she will be recommending in the next AR.

Thanks again for your help

I would wait until the AR report is written and sent and you know whats in it. I would not rock the boat until the report is with the SEN officer.
If the NHS cannot provide SALT they don't have to get a replacement - they have no legal duty to provide it. The Council is responsible for ensuring the Statement is delivered so if NHS cannot provide a SALT the council must employ a private one.
if the SEN officer realises that there is even a possibility of having to pay privately, even for a short period you can guarantee that pressure will be put on SALT to water down their recommendations and before you know it the twice a week will be twice a term after AR.
Sii tight until the report is in.
How long until the AR meeting? I might even wait until after then. You want the maximum amount of SALT in the statement. You do not want to tip the SEN officer off to reduce SALT.
Once you know what is going to be in the report or new Statement you can then make waves to get the Statement enforced.
I know its a few weeks gap but better that than a watered down statement you are stuck with for the next 12 months until an appeal is heard.
I would keep SALT on side as much as you can until after AR.

Thanks Agnes, that's good to know. AR is beginning of May so not too long.

I'll sit tight, my fight mode is always sitting just below the surface so it doesn't take much to rear it's ugly head. Unfortunately yesterday, the TA told me about the SALT I then go straight home and start making phonecalls and getting on peoples backs, then DD2 comes home with a letter saying the children will all still be getting their therapy. oops!
