also im petrified they are going to stop his support -he gets 2 hours a week atm and isnt statemented.... so when he does well with support, they seem to stop it untill he falls right behind again....im sooooo fed up....

Ok he is year 4 but being taught year 3 work? in which case he is behind? or has he caught up with year 4 level?

What is his level in terms of literacy and numeracy.

Have they kept you informed on his level and how much improvement he has made? Does he have an IEP and has he improved with his targets set or is he still struggling.

Has he been seen by an Educational Psychologist and if so what were his/her findings.

Is 2 hours enough support or do you feel he is struggling.

How is your son feeling about school and does he cope well or not.

Have a meeting with the school and if you dont know his levels ask, ask them about continued support in year 5/6 and if it is going to stay.

All these things you need to do/weigh up to come to the conclusion on wether to apply for a statement yourself.

Think on terms of in another year he will be going senior school where he could well use additional support. If a statement is needed it is best to do it now as it can take a LONG time to come into force.

sorry for late reply, yes he is in year 4 and being taught year 3 work :( he is even behind in that.
he is level 2b i think :/ forr literacy and numeracy .... which i believe is lower thank he should be at.
all the teacher has told me is that he is behind but makes improvements when support is in place, then they stop the support and then he goes behind again... he is on an iep- but struggles with that also :(
personally 2hours a week is not enough for him but due to funding we were told it was adequate.
my boy likes school-and never says much- the only thing he complains about is the physical side of things like pe etc.
im waiting regarding support as was told they would provide support till easter and get back to me... iv been at work yesterday and today so will be seeing teachers tomorrow.
im at my wits end...im pretty crap with all this and getting so stressed :(

My DS is level P8 for literacy and moves to year 3 juniors he is also way behind. I hope someone comes along that knows the curriculum levels to help you work out how behind your boy is for statement purposes as I am not experienced enough to help you on this.

But I would say try not to get stressed over it and go in with positive attitude tomorrow that your son is still behind. Point out when help stops he goes backwards so there is no continued improvement and you feel he needs to be supported more and continually as this yo yo effect on acheivement is not good. Mention applying for a statement just purely to see what reaction you will get. If there has been no improvement with his IEP for any length of time that will also show more support is needed so ask how they are going to go about improving his chances of succeeding.

Start making good records perhaps arranging a meeting every month or so to discuss his levels and improvements so you keep on top of where he is and record it. :)

Sorry, wrote a post and lost it!

2b is what DC should be aiming for at the end of KS1, Y2. By the end of Y4, 3b, by the end of Y6 4b. This used to be an average, but is now seen as a target. Your DC should be making one whole level progress every 2 years.

What was your DS's levels at the end of KS1, Y2? He should be nearly one whole level above that now. Otherwise he's not making adequate progress. He may have started at a lower level, it's progress that counts. he is nearly 2 years behind the target, but that's fairly common within School Action.

Is he on SA+, has he seen an Ed Psych? That's what I'd be pushing for next, if not. They are supposed to advise the school with strategies to help your DS.

I'm sorry but I don't know what abd and left hemi means. Is it CP? Have you considered requesting Statutory Assessment for a Statement? I don't know how successful you would be, it depends on the failure to make progress within the school's resources. It may be that the school has to provide much more support itself before SAssessment would be agreed. Hope others can come on with more knowledge. Smile

thanks for the replies :) abd is a spelling mistake blush it was meant to say and lol
hemiplegia is a form of cerbral palsy-he had a stroke so his left side is weaker.
yeah he is on schoola ction plus atm, but as soon as he makes an ounce of progress they put him back to school action-and he doesnt make any progress at all....
im not sure of levels, i have asked this morning for an appointment with the senco at the school. i also mentioned another assessment with the ed psych.
how would i go about a statutory assessment?

i tr not to get stressed but it is so hard :(

I think you can contact the LA sen department directly to ask for a statutory assessment, but the senco maybe supportive of asking for one herself anyway. It seems they are missing the point of school action plus, if they move him down when he makes progress....can you raise this with the senco too. Any decent teacher will be able to differentiate the yr5/6 work and support a child working at a different level, but again if you are worried, ask the senco what support the class teacher will be getting in order for her differentiate appropriately. does your ds have any support?

coff33pot · 18/04/2012 11:22

You can apply for statutory assessment yourself IPSEA is the website you need to look at for information on this. It is way easier than you think.

See what the senco says at the meeting then decide from there. There are plenty of people here that can help you with applying and each stage you go through if you decide to to it :)

Good luck at the meeting.
