Can't believe what I learned from the very first chapter! I had heard a little about sensory issues but didn't really understand it and thought it was just about being 'over' sensitive. I feel like I understand DD a bit better already after reading chapter 1.
DD licks EVERYTHING, is constantly climbing, running or bouncing up+down (which I put down to being a bit hyperactive), loves tickling and doesn't respond to speech/calling her name etc (only a handful of words at 2.5+struggling to teach her language), she doesn't seen to care what you are saying and won't give eye contact easily, but does respond more to very animated/high pitch etc.
Just learned that this is probably as she is under sensitive to sound/movement. Also I think the methods in this book are going to work so much better than ITTTT as it really concentrates on the getting their attention+keeping it, this is something I've been struggling with.
Did say I'd post on how I found the book and although I havnt read all the way through yet I can see its going to be a great help so very happy :)

Its a brilliant book - I did the course via SALT a couple of years ago and it was the best thing we could have done for DS - his speech improved so much and he has gone from Own Agenda to Early Communicator.

That's great Voidka. I think DD is at requester stage at the moment as she does take us by the hand to things (to open a closed door etc)
I am going to try the PECS again, we did it briefly last year after hearing about it on here and DD got the hang of it with the picture of milk but then the cards got worn/broken/eaten! and I didn't do more.
I am making cards using photos of her juice cup, favourite cartoon etc and this weekend I'm getting them laminated!

I'm really pleased you like it! It was a complete revelation to me as well, as all the professionals, the books and Earlybird etc had focused on the hyper sensitivities, being over sensitive, and my DS is almost exclusively hypo sensitive or under sensitive. I just hadn't realised it until More than Words. Here's a link for anyone else who might like to buy it cheaply.

And it's a great way to start doing something positive at home instead of forever waiting for the professionals to do something!

Sorry to jump on this thread but is this book useful for a child who is really verbal, above average vocab, good at observing/commenting on his surroundings but lacking instinctive understanding of social rules of language, eg initiating/participating in conversation? Glad it's been helpful to you ohso

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 14/04/2012 23:23

Not sure, Worrier. How old is your DC? My DS was pretty much non-verbal until he was 3.6 but once he got the point of communicating at 4.6 or so I stopped using the book TBH.

lisad123 · 14/04/2012 23:37

Worrier I would say it would be helpful. You would be better looking at social stories.

lisad123 · 14/04/2012 23:38

Ps, I buy my PECs from eBay as too much to make my own. I also have PECS system on the ipad

StarshitTerrorise · 14/04/2012 23:47

Probably not Worrier. It's an excellent book and you'll still learn things from it but I don't think it would be good value at the stage you are.

StarshitTerrorise · 14/04/2012 23:50

'Crafting connections' may be worth a look though. It is about teaching social interaction.
