We all know how caring our AS children are, lack of empathy paah, a lack of fake empathy maybe.

DS is 8 next week, my mum has just asked what he would like for his birthday. His request was for World Peace Smile

DD and some friends did a sweet shop on the front yesterday and made £2 each, ds helped albeit with lots of tea breaks, what has he done with his share? put it in the charity box at Tesco.

Just wanted to share.

Awww. I can't work out if my DS has no empathy or just an evil sense of humour. He's just spent 5 days with his dad, the longest time all 3 boys have been away from me. He says it was the best 5 days ever... with a big grin on his face. [bugrin]

Its a strange one, the lack of empathy, in some ways he does lack empathy but in some situations he seems to be over empathetic. I have read lots of conflicting views, I haven't completely made my mind up, it's so complex.

There are some theories that children with ASD may have too much empathy and can't handle it, so shut that part of themselves off.

This seems to apply to my ds1, at least sometimes. He will get really distressed if for example, he knows something that he knows will upset someone else if they hear etc. It really distresses him, so he will keep things to himself and struggle rather than tell someone what's bothering him in case it upsets them too.

He can',t bear the thought of people he cares about being upset or in pain, but isn't able read the signs that they are when they are, iyswim. He can't read their emotions, so he doesn't know he needs to be empathic at that point, but if you tell him how someone is feeling, he cares deeply about it and often becomes upset himself.

Oops, meant to say - Peekabooby, your ds sounds like such an amazing, caring boy. You must be very proud of him. Smile
