ASD toilet training - pants or boxers?

DS (4) goes to a special school. Teacher is going to try toilet training a few of the class when they start back after Easter, we will do the same at home. I'm not confident that we are going to get anywhere this time, the rest of the class are older, but I'm going to give it a try as school has a good track record with toilet training!
I'm after some help on underwear for ds - what have you found easier with your boys - pants or boxers. Ds has only just started to pull his trousers up and down when dressing so I want to make it as easy as possible.

Any other tips would be helpful too!

I'd suggest boxers/trunks for a slightly different reason (which may or may not be relevant for you). DS (5) is fine on the toileting front but doesn't really manage to pull his pants/trousers back up particularly well, nor does he notice (has a general lack of self awareness). He used to go round with his trousers/pants half down and his bottom sticking out - and got rather a lot of looks/comments that I noticed (not him!). Since moving to boxers at least he's only showing his underwear to the world!

cwtch - can you take him shopping to choose his own? Or get some "like Daddy has" so that he can relate to them (and apologies if daddy is not n the scene)

cwtch4967 · 04/04/2012 16:46

He's not able to choose for himself - he would be too distracted by cartoon characters! Does Mr Tumble have a range of undies???

Daddy wears trunks, ds has learning difficulties and would only copy him if daddy has lightening Mcqueen on his pants! lol

LOL at daddy wearing Ligtening McQueen underpants. I'm sure if you googled them, the good old WWW would oblige!!!!

Ds had pants because they are so cheap to buy in Tesco as quite often they were so disgusting I had to throw them out. Or if not, being cotton they could go on a boil wash without dissolving! Just treated him to a packet of 'Animal' trunks (after he enjoyed Muppet movie) and the Animal transfer fell off after the first wash so the character ones don't always work out anyway.
Another reason is he can't manage to do fastenings on trousers so if he wears jeans etc I leave them fairly loose so that he can still pull them up and down by himself if he needs to. Boxers would ruck up and be uncomfy whereas the tighter-fitting pants are ok for that.

Catsdontcare · 04/04/2012 19:30

I went for cheap pants because I could throw away the really grim ones! There were occasions when it was easier to cut the pants off than to face the mess of smearing as you pulled them down, ds has really loose poo so know flipping it out into loo!

Sounds like a trip to Tesco to bulk buy pants.

Thanks for the help.

If anyone finds Mr Tumble adult and child undies please let me know!

I used trunks which I bought from M & S and to be honest they were just as cheap as pants in Tesco at the time. DS hates pants and rips them off and his trousers as soon as he is home from school. But with these seamless trunks they actually stay on! He says they feel like his skin so thats a winner for me now just to get him to keep trousers on too lol

Also he found managing pants difficult due to the curling up as he tried to pull them up again which just agrivated him and he started to wee through them into the toilet instead!

Pixel · 04/04/2012 22:01

Perhaps you should just buy a few pairs of each to start with and see which ones your ds manages best?

saladsandwich · 04/04/2012 22:10

my ds likes disney shop undies with the elastic waistband tight fit, i havent found trunk type boxers small enough for his little skinny frame, when training though we used cheap underpants but a size up so they where easier to pull up and down. he hated those loose fit boxers they scrunch on his legs when his trousers are up

starfishmummy · 05/04/2012 00:04

lol at Dad wearing Mr Tumble pants! I was thinking more that they had the same style, rather than the decorations!!

cwtch4967 · 05/04/2012 10:21

Ds wouldn't notice the style only the decoration! If we thought it would work dad would willingly wear Mr Tumble pants to get ds out of nappies!!!!

The tight m&s trunks sound good, this is a whole new world to me as when dd toilet trained it was easy with knickers.
