Colds and speech therapy

My DS is two and has speech therapy twice a week for a language delay caused by a diagnosed neurological issue. He suffers from terrible colds all of the time.

Our neurologist recommended that DS has speech therapy twice a week. DS has one speech session a week through a government provided program called Early Intervention (we are based in the US) and another private session with a different therapist.

The private therapist has her own child who is 1.5 years and is concerned that if she comes to see me and allows DS to play with her toys when DS has a cold that DS will pass on the cold to others (particularly her daughter).

DS has had a cold pretty much constantly since September. Whilst never really really bad, just as it seems that it is going another cold comes in it's place. DS has an older DS who goes to nursery and he also plays with other children and we go to playgrounds, etc. so he does get exposed to germs.

I have an appointment with the Dr on Wednesday to ask if there is a reason why DS has so many colds. I suspect the Dr will say that it is norma and some suffer more than others.

We have an enormous amount of appropriate toys which could be used by her for speech therapy and I have suggested this, however, I she still seems a bit reluctant.

Anyway, I the point of my post is I am wondering if it is normal for a speech therapist to expect me to cancel speech therapy because of a cold?

i think you need to find another therapist. we are talking about a cold not measles! If it is such a problem she should clean the toys afterwards. I am not sure why her daughter is playing with her speech therapy toys either. Seems very strange to me.

My daughter used to have a tracheostomy and as a result of this had tons of chest infections due to the trachy and night time reflux. The SLT we had at the time decided to lecture me on keeping her healthy. Needless to say she was shown the door, and I put in a complaint about her attitude to the PCT. We were given a much better therapist who was more understanding about trachy-d kids.

Thank you. I was wondering if it was just me. Perhaps there is a cultural difference in the way we approach things.

My DH doesn't really like the speech therapist much as she always makes me feel like a bad mother, just small comments which at the time she says them I just take, then afterwards realise what she is implying.

I will look into how to get a replacement. Thanks again.
