Dear all,

DS is 7 and has Dx of ASD and DCD. He struggles with writing at school but is fine at reading. He has been having piano lessons for a few months now, as he likes it and it should (hopefully) help with fine motor control, although I'm not expecting (nor have seen) any real musical progress Wink

Today his lovely piano teacher (soooooo patient and SEN friendly) came to tell me that she has been experimenting with coloured paper. She gave him the same piece, but one was on white paper, one yellow and one blue. The normal white he could play a few bars before stopping, the yellow only a few notes, but on blue paper he played from start to finish with only a few mistakes :)

I hadn't realised this was an ASD thing, although now I've googled it I can see lots of info. But lots of it mentions dyslexia as well. Does it mean that he might be dyslexic as well?

Also, is there a proper way to find the right colours or is it just trial and error?

Any advice gratefully received, thanks

Hello
Our ds is dyslexic and just started using coloured overlays which have also helped his piano playing. He is also a good reader but with terrible spelling and handwriting. He's not asd but my brother-in-law is so its definitely in the family and I have read that they are often co-occurring. Equally I believe you can have Irlens syndrome and not be dyslexic. Sorry that's not at all conclusive is it. Anyway you can be tested and then have glasses made to the right tint. We went here www.city.ac.uk/health/public-clinics/fight-for-sight-eye-clinic

Thanks for the link. I'll look for a clinic near me that might be able to do this
