I knew it was coming, but it's still a shock. If anyone would like to tell me what now that would be great. I'm so confused, I thought I would be happy when we had a diagnosis but, I feel like i'm in shock. I can't explain how I feel.

I can empathise with you completely, I think what you feel is completely normal. You wait for a diagnosis and although you know, it is still a shock when it comes.

The feeling of shock was my first reaction, my DH was in denial. After the intial shock I then wanted to know as much as I could about DS condition, that's the way I coped. The thing that helped me was meeting other people in the same situation.

Intially though just try and take it easy, it will get easier. Big hugs(())

It is perfectly normal to feel shocked exo, even if you knew what was coming.

I dont think you should do anything straight away other than be kind to yourself and take some time out to come to terms with the diagnosis.

My Dd3 was dx'ed with ASD in september 2011, it had taken 3.5 years to get the dx but it was still a shock.

The first thing i did a couple of weeks after was speak to the senco at school and find out what they could do to help.

I have another Dd who is 23 who i believe has aspergers and adhd. Its a tough combo but you have come to the right place for support.

Welcome to the sn boardSmile

My first big of advice would be to allow yourself some time and space to process it all. Have a nice big glass of Wine and some chocolate if you have it and don't put any pressure on yourself to thing about or do anything at this point. Just breathe.

Nothing has to happen straight away, nothing has changed - your dd is still your dd, but now you have the diagnosis, you have the signpost you need for any professionals involved with her to understand and obtain the support she needs.

It's a shock when you finally get a diagnosis, especially if/when you have spent a lot of time fighting to be heard and its very hard to put into words the emotions that you go through - but its totally normal and pretty much all of us here on MNSN will have been through the same thing at some point.

Do keep posting, tell us a bit about your dd, her situation and what you would like to happen next and I'm sure there will soon be someone along - far better qualified than me - to offer you some fantastic advice about what the next step should be.

Well done on getting over the first hurdle and have a very unmnetty ((hug)).

Hugs, Wine and more chocolate sent to you from me x Allow yourself time to absorb it in. Even the knowing whats coming still feels like you have hit a wall when someone else confirms it. Then go out and get all the advice you need to help you. I have found loads on here and loads of support too. :)

Thank you all. I've lurked over here for a while and you are all very helpful and supportive.

I will be back on and will share a bit about DD, i'm swamped in paperwork at the moment.
