Im stuck and i really dont know what to do.

DD is 10, with very severe SLI, she is statemented but iv now hit a slight problem, she is due to move to high school yr 7 in sept, but, the local SEN school says she is to bright and that she will be to advance for them, yet the MS schools are saying her levels are way to low and that they cant meet her needs. so where does that leave me.

Are there any independent schools that might fit the bill? If no state school is appropriate then maybe the LA will have to cough up. I take it there aren't any units attached to MS schools that would be suitable. I'm surprised that all the MS schools are being so negative. Some of my local ones are equally rubbish but a coupe have good SEN depts that almost seem like small SS within the larger school. So DC can use the facilities, have access to good sports, technology, ICT facilities etc, mix with the other MS DC (if appropriate) but still get lessons at their level.

Are there any ARCs or units attached to MS high schools in your area?

StarlightDicKenzie · 26/03/2012 17:09

independent sector?

mebaasmum · 26/03/2012 17:43

where about. In the country are you? if in the south east what about schools such as St Dominics, Blossom House, moor house, st catherine isle weight. I am sure there are lots more

Im in west yorkshire, The only MS school with the provision that my DD needs is the 1 that said that her levels are to low and that she would not be able to cope, then the nearest SEN school have said that she is to bright to be considered for there school, there isnt any other MS with SN provision in our catchment area. yet there are other SEN schools but its going to be hard to find 1 that can meet my DD needs

Do you think the MS school would be able to meet her needs if extra provision was made available for her there?

saladsandwich · 26/03/2012 20:34

my friend had similar with her child, the SEN school in the end took her child in after a TAC meeting. i think it was something to do with the criteria for getting into the school, they only accepted children with severe learning difficulties and on some reports her child was moderate on them...

you can apply for schools out of catchment, that was my friends next option but i think its more complicated. good luck x

To be fair, Alison, this really isn't your problem. The LA has the responsibility to meet your DD's needs. They need to be looking at the options and telling you what they are. Of course you have the right to ask for a particular school, but ultimately it's their problem.

XxAlisonxX · 27/03/2012 19:29

I know that the LEA have a responsibility to make sure she gets the right education, and to answer the other question, no she would not be able to cope at all in a MS school, the MS school that has the correct provision for her said NO, his exact words were " we have never admited a child with scores as low as these, there is no way that we could meet her needs here, and it is clearly obvious that a MS school is not sutable for her". Yet the HT of the nearest SEN school said that her scores are to high and she would be infront of most of the pupils, which would end up in holding her back.

It really looks like you may need a school out of borough or independent in that case. Pretty tough if you are rural. Sad

beautifulgirls · 27/03/2012 19:34

Can you get them to put this in writing for evidence and start to look at small independant schools? I have no idea if there may be private special needs schools around you but there are one or two in this part of the country so perhaps there might be an option for her in similar near you?

XxAlisonxX · 29/03/2012 10:30

I have spent hours searching, there is no other schools, out of borough or private or independant, im totally stuck.
