this afternoon at 3.30pm we go to see the ASD specialist for the results of DS ADOS assessment, we have been told that we shall find out today if he has ASD or not.

We are hoping for a dx because DS is out of school due to severe anxiety and really needs the help that a dx will bring, please can you all send us "positive dx vibes" for this afternoon!!!

Well the answer is NO, he has "autistic traits" but the ADOS test didnt show up anything, when i asked what they thought of his sensory problems ie noises smells they said they would have to explore that.

She did say he is obviously suffering from severe anxiety and stress and they want to find out whats causing that, she said we could be looking at an anxiety disorder or an obsessional disorder. so weve got to explore lots of other things.
its really annoying because to us he fits the criteria. i have AS myself and he is like me but tbh i sort of expected this because everyone ive spoke to has had a hard time getting a dx for their child of ASD.

I just dont know what else it could be, oh the good thing is that theyve agreed that he cant possibly be in school atm and both Consultants have told the LEA that they must provide a home tutor until such a time that he can return.
So feel a bit sad really because its going to be a long time before we get a dx

I'm sorry to hear that Jenk, as I know how important it was for you to recieve a diagnosis today, looks like you're back to square one again.

I would look at this in a positive way. I'm not making light of an anxiety disorder, must be truly terrible for your ds, but hopefully in time with plenty of counselling he might well overcome it, and be able to lead the life that other children can enjoy. Until then though I hope he gets all the help and support that he needs, with or without a diagnosis.

rummum · 03/02/2006 18:04

sorry you didn't get the DX you were expecting, but glad they are going to address the problems he's having, and getting a home tutor...
(wonder what that EWO woman thinks of that)

jenk1 · 03/02/2006 18:38

Well rumum she wont have anything to say to us because she,s been removed from DS case at our request for accessing his medical records without our consent, i bet she,s not happy though.

I cant stop thinking about CAMHS this afternoon, DS has obsessions, trouble with sensory issues,he is very clumsy,he flaps when excited or distressed,he has to know in advance everthing and has routines, im very confused.

I have a feeling we will be going down the same route with DD.. she doesn't fit neatly into any box. We have been refered to the SOCAM (?) team, just waiting for an appointment...

jenk1 · 03/02/2006 19:29

Whats socam? ive never heard of that

Not quite sure what it stands for something about social and comunications difficulties... is an asd clinic. I think it used to be called
chadic ??
The school say they can't help daughter until she has a dx.

jenk1 · 03/02/2006 21:57

its catch 22 isnt it, you cant get help unless you get a dx, you cant get a dx easily

yes, we are really pleased about the home tutoring.
DS wants to go to the new school that is currently being built so that is a really good sign but he doesnt want to go back to the old one and who can blame him? theyve failed him repeatedly every year.

We are hoping for him to get the home tutor until the end of this school year at least and then slowly integrate him back into the new one because for every child it will be a new experience not just DS.

Davros · 04/02/2006 17:28

Hmmmmm, AS very often includes anxiety and obsessive behaviour, esp at his age and considering what he's been through.... SOrry, not much help.

jenk1 · 04/02/2006 17:56

bit confused as to what happens next.
Psychiatrist wants us to put DS on anti depressants, dont really want to do that at the moment.
We feel that this is a bit of a cop out on their part as they are basing their non dx on just the ADOS and nothing else.
Original consultant wants DS back to clinical psychology where she can help him she says, what usually happens in our NHS is that first clinical psych see the patient then they refer them on to Paed and then the Paed will refer to CAMHS. DS totally skipped over the Paed as Psychology were so sure he was ASD and was referred straight to CAMHS, then we had the junior Psychiatrist at CAMHS who tried to overturn my dx of AS and disagreed with everything we said about DS so the consultant from Psychology pushed for a referral to Psychiatrist trained in ADOS and she sayd no to ASD because ADOS says no, BUT she wouldnt listen to what we were saying re his sensory issues and not being able to socialise and his strict routines, she suggested it might be down to him having to go to a new school even though we said he has been like this from being a small baby and then she said maybe its because i had PND and there is an attachment issue GRRRRRR

OP posts:
coppertop · 04/02/2006 18:27

An attachment issue???!

Sorry you didn't get the dx, Jenk.

Davros · 04/02/2006 19:02

Get back to Psychology asap! I don't think Psychiatrists should be let loose on young children with developmental issues NOT attachment issues, grrrrrr.

jenk1 · 04/02/2006 20:35

So am i right in thinking that the clinical psychologist can dx ASD?

If thats so then that explains why she keeps emailing and phoning me and saying "dont worry if you dont get the dx because he is coming back over to me and i will help him"

She knew that he wasnt going to get dx,d the other day and was preparing me so i didnt flip out in the CAMHS psychs office as i have a tendency when faced with something unexpected.

My mum is so upset especially at the "autistic traits" bit, i dont understand how you can have autistic traits with being ASD, to me its either black or white.
