Great news for working families with disabled children ? now exempt from Working Tax Credits changes

Mar 20 2012

Contact a Family welcomes the government?s announcement that families with disabled children will now be exempt from the changes to Working Tax Credit rules.

The rules due to come into effect from April, required couples to increase their working hours from 16 to 24 to continue to receive Working Tax Credits.

But regulations published by the government yesterday, say that a couple will continue to receive Working Tax Credits so long as one partner works 16 hours a week and their partner is entitled to Carer?s Allowance.

Srabani Sen, Chief Executive of Contact a Family, said: ?We are delighted the government has seen sense on this issue. Contact a Family has campaigned hard on behalf of parents to highlight the unfairness of the proposed changes. This is a fantastic result for families across the UK and for Contact a Family.

?As well as the obvious challenges with the economic situation and high unemployment, many working couples with a disabled child have less scope to be able to work extra hours than other parents due to their substantial caring responsibilities. Yesterday?s concession will ensure that hard working families, working in paid employment and caring for a disabled child at home, won?t be worse off.?

The government has also amended the rules on getting help with childcare costs. From April childcare costs can be included in a tax credit claim where one partner works 16 hours a week and their partner is entitled to carer?s allowance. This opens up childcare to a group that weren't previously entitled.

Contact a Family would urge any family concerned or unsure about changes to benefits and tax credits to call our helpline 0808 808 3555

Does anyone know what this bit means?

My dh works full time, my 5yo (ASD - HR DLA, I get CA) is home educated & I have my 2yo in nursery 2.5 days a week so I can work with ds. We currently get CTC with the severe disability element but not WTC I wonder if that has changed.

I am not sure anyone will at the moment as it was only announced this afternoon. Maybe you could get in touch with contact a family on the phone number at the bottom and ask them.

Well I used to send dd2 to a private autism school and it was very costly, they said I couldn't get child care part as I wasn't working BUT they class carers as an income Angry I guess that means you can claim some child care element now Grin

architeuthis · 20/03/2012 17:42

thank you! DH is going to call DWP tomorrow, I'll report back.

droves · 20/03/2012 17:51

How does this work ?

I was told as we get the disabled element tax credits for dd4 I couldn't claim carers allowance .

Does this mean I could claim carers now ? Or was I misinformed before ?

droves that is rubbish. The only reasons for not being able to claim carers allowance are:- if your child is getting low rate care, if you personally earn more than £100 a week(not partner, just you), you are a student and study for more than 21 hours a week or you are receiving ESA( the old incapacity benefit) go on line and claim it if you don't fit into any of the above. You where misinformed. You should be able to get 3 month back pay too!

Dh works part time , Dd4 gets high rate both parts , I gave up work ( hotel) to look after her as we couldn't cope with her all nighters (asd) .

You have been lied too and missing out on a fair amount of money. Claim carers ASAP, you can do it online. You will have to inform ctc as they count it as income but you won't lose the disabled element of ctc if that's all you get.

keepingupwiththejoneses · 20/03/2012 20:33

lisa is right you can get both, I do!

You claim carers but have to tell tax credits as they will take that income into account and reduce your tax credits a bit - but its still better to claim carers.

Make a complaint about wrong advice and ask them to backdate.

If that fails go to ombudsman

Triggles · 21/03/2012 08:37

Okay, I've been putting off claiming carer's allowance, but I think I will have to do so now. I will be going online to look into that today. Thanks for the info.

Triggles · 21/03/2012 14:21

I've now applied for carer's allowance. Thank you for the kick in the bum that I needed to get it done. Grin
