Hi all

Am hoping for some advice - feeling quite at sea!

My DS (4 next week) has always struggled with language. He also has some fine and gross motor issues. He has been seen twice by a developmental paediatrican (who ruled out ASD, but didn't give much more input), by a SALT, who concluded that he "displays difficulty in attending, listening and interacting during adult-led activities, particularly when he is required to process information from several sources simultaneously". He has been seen by a teacher from the Barnet Pres-school Team (not sure if the equivalent exists in other Boroughs) who thought that he has "auditory and processing" issues, and recommended that he see an Ed Psych to assess whether he requires a statement.

He is currently at the nursery of the school where he will go into Reception next year. He manages OK but struggles with following instructions and of course during circle time when he needs to listen and sit still for 30 minutes or so. The school have told us that there are a number of children ahead of us to see the allocated Ed Psych so it will be another 6 months before my DS could see him. The Senco gave us a list of recommended (private) Ed Psychs and I have an appointment for an assessment next week.

I am concerned as to whether she is the "best" person to see, as I was not entirely convinced that the Senco knew what she was talking about.... How do I go about checking? Or finding out whether there is someone more suitable? Also - what should my goals for the assessment be, particularly if we want to apply for a Statement? It is quite expensive, so I would like to make sure that we do not then find we need to see another one...

All thoughts/advice gratefully received.....

You can request a statutory assessment yourself full details on how to do this are on here and the education board need to get back to you within a set timescale and to arrange an assessment with an ed psych this should speed the process up a bit for you however the ed psych obviously cannot offer a definitive dx so a private assessment with a consultant would assist in my opinion with the statmenting process it did for us.

We saw a private clinical ed psych also he got us and Dd's nursery to complete the CARS questionnaire this ruled out ASD we also both filled out Connors questionnaires which confirmed ADHD and a questionnaire related to DCD or dyspraxia which confirmed this also. He also did various verbal reasoning and IQ tests when we were there and his report was extremely useful for our request for stat assessment as he was very thorough.
