Number memory forward is a test of auditory memory.

Number memory reversed is a test of working memory.

All of these types of test, which only provide Percentile ranking, and age comparisons ten only guides to performance in an educational setting, and not specific cognitive assessments. And we all have good days and bad days which can influence the outcome of a single says testing.
We are all different, we all have different cognitive skill strengths and weaknesses, and some can have cognitive skill disabilities. And all children until the age of maturation develop these various cognitive skills at different ages and different rates and it is only after the age of maturation 6-8 years of age that any remaining cognitive deficits can be considered to be be potentially a life long disability.
The issues related to Dyscalculia are similar to those which can cause developmental dyslexia and there are some issues which relate to Working memory for sentence processing and there are a wide range of memory issues

Auditory Processing is about how the brain processes all the sound based stimuli we hear, and this includes our sound based communication system speech, which is made up of multiple sound combination. ost who have an Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) will have problems in either processing phonics, and not being able to perform the so called phonic blending task, and can only match the whole sound of a word to its whole graphic representation (text), so your DSs phonological skills would not suggest an APD related issue, although there could be possible issues with low levels of background noise.

You did not mention the context of the tests, nor the type of professional who performed the tests which provided these results, as this could also be a factor with regard to interpretation of these results.

Thanks Indigo.

Hello dolfrog thanks for the information..the Taps-3 results where included in a report done by SEND services at my sons school, the visit was to ascertain if DS behaviours would make sense if viewed within the context of an Autism Spectrum Disorder...done by a Specialist Advisory Teacher and Senior Specialist Practitioner(language and communication Team).

I just keep reading through the papers(which I received from the school after requesting them in december) trying to work out what I can help DS with.

This a probable indication that the new proposed US DSM5 categorisation of ASD which will be introduced in 2013 will be followed here in the UK. The new proposals are narrowing the range of ASD criteria, which means that issues that will no longer qualify as being part of ASD require a different type of assessment and diagnosis. There is a vast body of ASD related research which has begun to identify the specific issues which can contribute to ASD, and they are also talking about possible multiple autisms which have different underlying issues which when they combine in various combinations can share similar outcomes.

Some of the issues which may begin to feature areAttention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Hyperlexia, Pragmatic Language Impairment (PLI), Savant Syndrome, Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), Specific Language Impairment (SLI), and Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) which can be a contributory factor or comorbid with regard to some of these issues.

Auditory memory is part of the long term memory, and some like me have a poor auditory memory, working memory is like the RAM of a computer, it is where we run the programs we need to perform all our daily tasks. We priorities how we use our working memories subconsciously, to cope with our bodies needs and coping with illness and stress always takes top priority, and then running the compensating coping strategies we need to work around any skill / ability deficits or disorders. Like RAM our working memories have limited capacity so we need to avoid overload, and crashing, so some tasks may have to either be put on hold or aborted so that the working memory can focus on the subconsciously defined top priority tasks (usually self organisation skills and sense of time abilities loose out). This can also cause problems with regard multi tasking which many who have these types of disability may not be able to do.

The TAPS test is only a screening test for possible auditory problems, especially in an education setting, and should involve further referrals to an audiologist qualified to assess and diagnose the full range of possible Auditory Processing Disorders. The full battery of APD tests can take a day or more to carry out, depending on the issues each individual case may present. And the Medical Research Council recommend a multi discipline Assessment The audiologist to diagnose the APD deficits/ disorders, a speech and language Pathologist to assess the implications the diagnosed APD issues have for Speech and Langauge development, and a psychologist to help investigate and explain the problems of living with the diagnosed APD issues, including in the education system.
