I have been told that schools don't need to do IEP's anymore. Is this true?

As far as I am aware, if the child is on the SEN register they should also have an IEP or an IBP. I had a major grump discussion about this at the boy's current school for DS1 as although he had external intervention (ASD team, EP etc) they didn't want to put him on the SEN register or give him an IBP/IEP, they just wanted to put intervention in place without writing it down. He is now on an IBP. DS2 is in the SEN register as he is gifted and talented for literacy so has to have an IEP. Just waiting for him to get his ASD dx finalised before push him to be on the other end of the SEN register too...

IEPs are best practice, but not compulsory if the school gives targets and measures progress in a different way. My DS's secondary school doesn't do IEPs but has a system of pupil passports and regular mentoring sessions with targets and a very proactive SEN department, so while I'm a bit Hmm about it, they do still get the job done.
