DDs (4.9yrs, def Autistic Spectrum, anxiety issues, very verbal, refuser, but all round superstar Wink ) class teacher has told them all that flies can cause plane crashes by annoying the pilot and therefore causing him to lose control of his plane.

what a fucking twat.

she now needs her fucking hood up and to close her eyes walking 50% of the way home as it's through the woods and there are (obviously) flies and, very soon, bees about.

nice one Angry

i know it's wrong to call him names because of this one incident but it's really wound me up.

she's in the wrong school, isn't she?

Oh dear :( I can sympathise as my dd2 who is only 2.6 is intensely petrified of all insects and bugs but inparticular of bees and things that fly! If anyone mentions the word bee it sends her into panic mode straight away!

Dd3's yr 2 teacher at her old school used to say really stupid things to jane.

She once told Dd3's class that her brother was in her mothers car when it was stolen!!

Dd3 was really upset by itSad

If I were you I would just tell your Dd that you think the teacher made a mistake and that you are sure that wouldn't happen.

This one incident didn't make me move Dd3 by the way, there was a whole catalogue of other stuff tooGrin.

JaneMare · 08/03/2012 10:07

oh crikey no, i'm not going to move her on the back of this one incident, but it's all adding up to a pretty poor picture tbh.

we did try to explain that perhaps he was just telling a story, and that it wasn't the sort of thing that really happens, but the fear of flies thing has been going on for a few weeks now, and we've only just got to the bottom of it. and of course, she wants to know WHY he told them something so scarey...

and we'd worked so hard on encouraging her to enjoy nature and the outdoors, trips to the woods and parks have been our saving grace on 'those' days

idiot he is

could you try explaining aeroplane systems to her? the computerised bits, etc which mean that it isn't 'just' one person flying the plane (and the fact ther is a co pilot always about etc)?

maybe running through some of this might help her see that a fly in the cockpit annoying someone woudl be, erm, a small thing annoying someone, and not lead to a disaster?

JaneMare · 08/03/2012 10:18

good idea, silverfrog

i've been googling to see what happens if a fly does get into the cockpit, and can find nothing whatsoever to say this has ever happened!

i'll get the 'flies' books out again too, leave them lying about so we can try to start again on those too

Thanks

oh, and on some flights (mostly African/middle East origin) they sprayed totally lethal bug spray and disinfectant before take off until very recently (may well still do, haven't been on a flight to Africa for a few years).

I don't know how much your dd would understand, but really, all the computerised bits do keep a running check on systems

there must be an Usborne book about it, or similar?

Catsdontcare · 08/03/2012 10:21

WhAt a moron. Stupid thing to tell any child really unless you want them to never go on a plane again. I would be annoyed if ds1 who is nt had been told that.

coff33pot · 08/03/2012 10:33

Clever teacher Hmm What an odd thing to come out with anyway.

DS overheard the teacher once saying she nearly died laughing. Of course it was obviously a statement that she had found something funny but as far as DS was concerned for a couple of weeks was that you cant tell jokes to teachers because they could die lol

SallyBear · 08/03/2012 10:33

JaneMare. Don't for goodness sake let her watch The Bee Movie. There is a scene where the bee flies into a car, causing driver to swerve all over the road crashing into cars. Another scene where the bugs all land on a windscreen, some dead some faking it and then the wipers are turned on. It would freak her out as she is already sensitive about things that fly.

Adults can really say the most thoughtless things. My MiL and my Mum have both said stuff to my DD which i have literally had to restrain myself from battering them senseless (am not prone to violence btw!). DD has had 3 jaw distractions and has malformed ears. MiL said proudly to her one day - "Oh you're so pretty you could be a model!" Seriously?! She has so many scars, and though lovely and beautiful to me - model material she ain't! My mum then told her that it was a big decision to have ear reconstruction surgery (which it is!) and that she mustn't be embarrassed about having cosmetic surgery (it's hardly that!) as Granny had cosmetic dentistry when she was 40 to close the gap between her two front teeth! FFS Mother!!!

angeLstillchasingDXpeacock · 08/03/2012 22:53

Oh my, Teachers really do NOT get it do they!!

My DS is prone to bottling things up, after hearing something others would think as "trivial"

He attends a church school, and one day (dont know if it was actually in church or a lesson..?) He had learned about a bible story where a man was told he must kill his son, but he didnt in the end and killed something "not human" (you can tell i didnt go to a church school lol)

This had my DS worried/stressed/anxious for DAYS, and when he finally told me what it was...i almost laughed right there in front of him (of course i didnt actually...but almost lol)..... Partly because of relief that it wasnt something "major", and partly because i wanted to march right into school, and ask them what the hell were they teaching my DS!!

I hope you manage to get this sorted....maybee a quiet word with the teacher in question to remind them of the sensitive nature of your DD, and how impressionable and LITTERAL she takes things.?
