Most Out Of SALT

DS ASD DX'd age 5 emerging speech.

SALT is coming round to our house 12/03/12.

How do you get the most out of these meetings as I feel they are so precious and want to make the best out of what we have?

Currently he has 10 visits a year mostly in school. I would prefer more intensive help especially as he has made great progress and is responding to treatment.

I have written some notes to give to her (similar to the one I posted on here to the GP), things I would like to discuss.

He is repeating everything you say as well as trying to say his own incomplete sentences. His speech just recently has taken a jump for the better so his development is coming on.

I want to know what we can do to support him. Feel totally out of our depth at times and all the information we need to move forward and re-assure us.
Strategies that would support and enable G in making him social. G is without friends and skills that would improve his life greatly.
Then offer a list of recommendations to the school on how best to help him. If the label isn't there, you cannot access the support and help that will lead to 'solutions'.

We have a PECS book folder but I am interested in Proloquo2go for an iPad, communication grids on my laptop (powered by Widgit) and GoTalk devises, Vox , and The Grid. In the TAC meeting they poo pooed any technology as I felt they want him to learn the old fashioned way.

I also worry that County Council staff do seem to have standard answers (eg you have given him a label now) brainwashed to them to save money or avoid timewasters or whatever.

Any comments greatly appreciated.

Talk to abilitynet and cerebra before the meeting. Both charities have great technology knowledge (including funding!) re the technology. That way you'll be informed of what your options are.

I was gobsmacked to win 30 mins a week salt (TA delivered but SALT overseen once a month) at educational Tribunal last term as my DS had never had any therapy at all. It is making all the difference. It's a long old process but if you think it's worth it don't be scared to pursue this route.

I don't think ten sessions a year is enough. The TAC team say it's because the LSA (20 hours a week) delivers and practises with G.

G knows how to navigate his way around Google for Thomas the Tank Engine only, as that is his interest. He is always watching you tube videos with Thomas in of course. I thinks he thinks he can speak alot more now because he copies everything that is said on these videos. Then mostly appropriate phrases do come out.

Any help appreciated, keep the comments coming.

What are the assessment names she could do?

Is he still considered as emerging speech if he repeats everything you say as well as trying to say his own incomplete sentences?

Want to know if he has delays and problems across the whole range with speech and language.

I don't want any problems to become entrenched. He is still reliant upon pulling adults to what he wants.

Failing to access the curriculum in group situations.
