Why do they disagree? Has he had issues at school that lead to you requesting a referral to camhs?

Or are they saying there is no problems at all?

Have you been seen by an Ocupational Therapist?

What have school got in place for him at the moment?

ds started to kick off at school refused to go to school kept escaping it took a lot of teachers to calm him etc. i got ds refered cause these episodes were worse at home.
his occupational therapist now goes into school on a regular basis but shes now having problems gaining access as well.
there is nothing in place for him at min i dont know why i dont think they have read or understood chamns report i know hes not sitting sats this year as he is too far behind but still cant get through to his sen teacher shes not returning my calls xx
not sure school understands slds xx

Poor mite no wonder he is stressing out if he is not understood.

For a start I would forget phoning the school and I would email or send a letter in writing. That should then get them to start acknowledging you. Also you will start to store up a paper trail of letters wether answered or not. Never just discuss on the phone.

Apply for a statement of needs yourself IPSEA website is great for info in telling you how to do this. (School can do it but tbh they dont seem in a hurry) Should they agree to assess then an educational psychologist will go into school and he will also be seen by a school doctor (peadiatrician usually) on behalf of the LAs assessment. Get your OT to write a full report detailing your sons dx and all of her suggestions to help him, including attending school on a regular basis to help with excercises and training advice etc. Camhs I expect would have sent you a report already so that can go to the LA too if they assess. If they havent put in recommendations then ask them to write to you any further recommendations they might have.

Meanwhile keep a diary of events both for home and for school, what has happened, how it was dealt with and the outcome if there was one. All this adds up to send off to the LA for their assessment.

I think you have got to start fighting your sons corner as it doesnt look like the school will.

If he gets a statement then the LA will put the OT recommendations in it. It is a legal document and you can insist the school compy or go right back to the LA and tell them they are not doing what has been requested.

Statments take a LONG time to come through so the sooner you start the better and it gets extremely harder to get one in senior school.

Good luck! There are loads of more experienced people on here where statements are concerned that will I am sure help you along the way :)

If you do a letter photocopy it Wink

Another thought. Should they ring you to come get him that is classed as exclusion so dont do so without making sure the school give you an official exclusion letter. It all adds to the weight that school are having issues and that your son needs support so its a GOOD thing :)

if you are having problems getting school to liaise, remember you can also contact the chair of governors, or the governor responsible for sen (sometimes this is the same person).

you could also contact your lea and find the area inclusion officer that deals with your school and ask for help. it won't make you popular, but it might make people understand that you are serious abiut getting support in place.

template letters for stat assessment on ipsea website too, i think. get it filled in and sent off including your professional reports, and send a copy to senco informing them you have done so.
