Sorry

I saw this early this morning and assumed that someone would happen by and help you..............

Is Makaton, like BSL, forgive the ignorance.

QE2 · 30/01/2006 22:48

makaton isexplained here

buzylizy · 30/01/2006 23:03

Hi I don't know makaton but have done sign - a - long which is very similar. if you look it up on the web as signalong try ringing them I know the lady who taught us said they were very helpful at describing how to do signs. Hope that helps.
If you get really stuck let me know and I can dig out my book.I will probally have to have a look anyway!!

Dingle · 30/01/2006 23:31

I will try to remember to look in my signalong books in the morning, but I use a version of "mine" followed by "yours."

Fist hand to your chest then twist fist out and towards the other person's chest IYSWIM.

Dingle · 30/01/2006 23:35

just checked and it's not in my signalong books 1,2 or 3. sorry. I am trying to think how/where I got told to use that, it might actually be Makaton then but not sure.

Sorry I can't be of any more help.

love Dingle.

eidsvold · 31/01/2006 03:37

thanks for that dingle - just not seen the speech therapist for ages and keep forgetting to ask her SEDU teacher.... think it is time to start using that one with dd1 although we have been saying the word for ages... she is not really getting the concept

ah, yet another instance of Makaton not having a sign that's needed rather frequently but individual signs for roti, chappati and naan bread! (now I like to eat all those three - but don't often need to discuss them with dd!)
In my big 'complete Makaton vocabulary' there's is also no sign for grapes (evidently a highly exotic foodstuff) and other common fruits. Mad, mad, mad.

Sorry, can't check whether 'share' is in there, though I suspect not. The book's at school.

LadySherlockofLGJ · 31/01/2006 08:06

I have the BSL books here if you would like the BSL sign for it.

SoupDragon · 31/01/2006 08:14

I have a feeling it involves moving your hands together in some way - kind of rubbing one palm on the other? Or moving them in a way that suggests passing something between 2 people... I'm sure I remember my friend signing it to her DD but I can't quite visualise it! It's been bugging me since I sa your original post but assumed someone else would know!

buzylizy · 31/01/2006 08:31

I Have asked my dd's teacher to email me with it so if she does I will let you know.

onlyjoking9329 · 31/01/2006 09:38

i could be wrong on this but is it one hand flat and use the other hand like a knife to divide a pizza then offer it out, at least that was our sign for share but dunno if it was makaton, BSL or i made it up,

LadySherlockofLGJ · 31/01/2006 09:48

Only joking

That is BSL.

eidsvold

Checked with one of the teachers this morning and there is no sign for share, the closest we could get was give.

eidsvold · 31/01/2006 11:50

thanks for all your suggestions - share is so ambiguous in terms of dd1s understanding - maybe I just work on turns.... your turn my turn. Not sure if aussie makaton has it - I only have stage one book.

thought it might be BSL, so i do remember some of it, i did it 4 years ago. i asked at dd's school they didn't know.i will ask the SALT tomorrow

nikkie · 31/01/2006 21:06

We use the BSL one with our makaton kids at school

Dingle · 01/02/2006 12:24

geekgrrl - do you want the signalong sign for grapes??

If it's any use;

Supporting clawed hand (palmup, pointing forward/in); working bunched hand twists from supporting palm to mouth.......as if you were twisting a grape from a bunch and eating it.

Nearest I can find to the naan breads etc is "curry"

joanna4 · 10/02/2006 23:31

I went on the makaton course last week i wanted the sign for share in the makaton book it was one flat hand using the other like a knife to divide as explained in an earlier post it was definately in a makaton book.
