Has anyone heard of these videos? They are supposed to be fantastic for ASD kids for developing vocabularly. Everyone raves about them in the US but I cant seem to find them in the UK

Any ideas?

Your wish will be my command....I love a challenge! Another suggestion is a company called 'Fledglings' ....They advertise that.... "Fledglings is a new search and supply service designed to help parents, carers and childcare professionals in the vital task of bringing up children." I've used them twice and they definitely are grrrrrreat..and seem very 'interested in SEN/Disabilities

See what i can do!

fio2 · 20/11/2003 20:12

are they any good? I keep getting e-mails about them but my speakers aren't working so I can't work out whether they are any good or not.......

Davros · 20/11/2003 21:19

Fledglings have been around for ages, don't you lot remember me mentioning them on the big nappies thread a few months ago? Huh! I've got a Baby Bumblebee video but have never looked at it, it was a gift. You can get them from the USA here or just have a browse. Not sure if they're available in the UK, maybe try Amazon? Also need to make sure you've got a TV/video that plays NTSC (or whatever its called).

RexandBen · 21/11/2003 14:02

Thank you Mrsforgetful & everyone . I had a search on Amazon but couldnt find them

I emailed Fledglings so hopefully they can help.

Davros have you ever ordered from Difflearn before?

Yes I have and they are wonderful. You have to email Julie, the mum who runs it, to get a shipping price. Luckily for me I was ordering stuff for the support group I run so added my private stuff on top and everyone agreed I didn't have to pay P&P in return for doing the donkey work. Otherwise, if P&P is too much, you could get someone going to the USA to get it for you or someone you know who lives there? Or order stuff between a few of you to incur only one shipping price between you (get the school or LEA to pay, ha ha ). Some of the stuff is available here, generally a few of the books, but not much of it

a quick update. I ended up getting the videos from the US Amazon site and they are fantastic. DS1 who's 2-and-a-half with autism and DS2 both love them and are BOTH saying the words. I would highly recommend them although one down side is how American they are (absolutely no offense meant!) Some of the words focused on are not commonly used in the UK such as 'fire truck' and 'stroller'. And DS1 now says banana with a stong American accent...!

are they ok for british video recorders or is yours multi-region?

fio2 · 01/02/2004 21:38

you can get them from winslow, i noticed

RexandBen · 04/02/2004 14:41

they work fine. we've just got an average video recorder but it is relatively new. I just have to adjust the tracking to stop flickering.

jimjams you can get them out of winslow, y'know that catalogue you told me aboutSmile are they any good rex and ben - worth the money?

which one did you buy?

Jimjams · 04/02/2004 15:32

I can't see them on the winslow website. I'll try and dig out my catalogue

RexandBen · 05/02/2004 15:25

yeah, I couldnt see them on Winslow either.

Fio2 - yes they are VERY good and I would highly recommend them. I think they are so good for 3 main reasons:

  1. The music - lovely classical music which apparently stimulates the brain and encouraged learning;
  2. The images shown (eg train, cat) are shown in many forms (real, toy) and colours and sizes which is fantastic for generalisation.
  3. The word are frequently repeated.

My two love them and both DS1 (16 months) and DS2 (2.7 yrs/autism) now know all the words both receptively and expressively (I've had the videos for 2 weeks and DS1 was completely non-verbal 4 months ago before ABA!)

Oh yeah, sorry Fio2 - I've got the Vocabulary Builders (1 & 2) which are nouns. I've also just ordered number 3, and the first two 'Action Words' videos which are verbs. Each video has about 23 words on it.
