School itself teachers/TA/senco/HT = lovely

methods = pulling my hair out they seem to be going backwards.

I got to be fair it could be DS regressing due to him having to stay extra time, gradual to ease him to full time but I cant work it out.

For a start it has been me that has put foot down in getting the ball rolling to having him back FT.

Statement all done. Which school couldnt wait for but now its here are poo pooing the methods/implementations. OT has been sighed at, salt suggestions have been sighed at, my suggestions sighed at (expected)

His first day with extra time went really well and I was choaked to come in and look in the class window to see him at a laptop (TA next to him) at a table with a couple more kids and the rest of the class doing the same thing :) It makes a nice mental picture to keep.

But after that its all gone wrong. They had a trip so he had to stay at home so he missed that day. Then the last day they changed the TA grrrr! just for that day.

Following week there was another trip and I told them he was coming in regardless. He went the trip actually went well and he had a good day but it was all day. Day after all goes to pot I get a phone call 15 mins before his usual time to collect saying he was unsettled so he didnt get his extra half hour. Next day I go in expecting him to be in class to spot the TA walking home already and low and behold he isnt in class and has spent from after dinner till 2.30 in with the senco colouring in! Then the following day I get another call and so I ignored the phone call and when I got there at the desired time he was fine again story reading with the TA. Each time I have gone in he has been fine, but they say unsettled.

Home book has been non existent which is a wind up. The OT has told them he needs a sensory diet plan heavy muscle work after every 10 mins of heavy going class work. They are insistent of keeping him stuck in the classroom without this and think he can just have quiet time in a corner as usual. and they wonder why he is unsettled. Its going to get worse the longer he has to stay.

I am panicking due to he is in juniors sept (they dont want him but not met him so another battle) I need him used to full time and I also need to see if the provision is going to work for DS before the time is up. This is only 5 months before summer hols its just not going to happen is it.......and now he isnt wanting to go to school :(

Coff

Things will probably improve once he's had time to establish a good relationship with the TA. It took DS at least a year before he was comfortable enough to trust support works

coff33pot · 03/03/2012 00:38

yes you are right wet I am trying to stay back and give them a couple weeks to get to grips with things. They have no actual plan, dont know who is going to have him at the mo the same TA is doing it. They only changed for one day and changed back (TA had to do something) it was just bad timing when he is out of sync and we really needed similarity right through.

What I am desperate for is him to mix with his peers for his social skills side too and every time he is having a break hey ho he is in on his own with the TA or the senco. HE NEEDS CHILDREN! Its babysitting at the moment and has been for a while and its annoying.

Thing is unless I started the ball rolling into integrating him back I think everything would have stayed stalemate till the summer hols. At the same time they say they cant do much of the provision without him being there which I totally agree with as its obvious. But also they now say none of it will work Confused But they havent started! I think maybe they are too scared to change this confinement (teachers are human after all)

Teacher is saying if he goes for sensory excercises he will miss out on what she is teaching the others. I can see her point and understand her from the teaching point of view that she is treating him the same which I am grateful for, but in the same breath "he is very unsettled" "is everything ok at home?" (this question grates)keeps coming out. She either cannot or will not accept the fact that he will actually learn more by not being overloaded with it all and that it will make her life easier too. Its headbanging.

Schools upside down, DS is upside down and I am slowly chomping at the bit lol.

He has a statement. They HAVE to carry out the recommendations because it is a legal piece of paper. It is NOT up to them to say they won't work either! The sensory stuff is very important now more demands are being placed on him as he staying longer. The priority is getting him used to being there NOT the learning as such.

HolyCalamityJane · 03/03/2012 14:48

Hi Coff agree with Spinkle. They have to do what the statement says they can't pick and chose the bits they want to do but I understand how difficult a situation it is as you don't want to have a row with the school. You are quite right not answering the phone. They need to be able to deal with issues themselves if they keep relying on you instead of finding their own ways to deal with situations you will be up and down to the school like a yo-yo. Our last school tried to do this it was almost as if my DD was too much trouble for them and would be on the phone to me daily (she doesn't go there anymore)
They should really only be phoning you in an emergency how will your DS ever settle it they call you all the time. My DD learnt that if she played them up in school she would get home early!!!

NoHaudinMaWheest · 03/03/2012 15:12

Oh Coff sorry its so difficult after all your pushing to make it work. Of course they have to do what is in the statement. I can see why you don't want to upset the school though. Can you ask the OT who made the recommendations to talk them through with the teacher so that she really gets it?

coff33pot · 03/03/2012 23:50

Thanks guys sorry for late reply been in hospital with eldest DD again. Just got home all is ok just usual stuff and a stay overnight. WHAT a week lol.

I tried to get hold of OT friday but no joy. Will try again Monday as I feel its only right she knows what she is up against. She is really nice and 'gets' DS issues totally and its unfair for her and DS that the teacher is saying yes in the right places but not following her lead. Plus she did say she was going to start 10 or so intensive block sessions after half term that either she would do or she would show staff. I am going to suggest/PLEAD! that she does them to hopefully give him a fighting chance.

The difficult thing is he has after all this work is a summer break and then new school and have to start all over again. He will have transison meets at the other school to go through aswell no doubt so he is going to have such a hard time of it. Its not going to improve overnight but a start in the right direction would help!

Hey ho see how we go :)
