Retained Moro reflex diagnosed

Thanks to the very detailed information Indigobell has provided on here we took our 9yr old ds to have a behvioural optometrist assessment.

Alongside a few issues they have given him exercises for they also picked up that he has a (mild-level 1) retained moro reflex. We have some exercises for this that we do every day - but anyone any idea how long this might take before we start to see the benefit?

No, but I'd be really interested to know what the exercises are. Grin

Where can I find out more about retained reflexes? Any good books?

Becaroooo · 26/02/2012 20:27

april google Sally Goddard Blythe for books/articles. The well balanced child is very interesting.

My son (8) had a retained moro reflex but much more severe than your son -he scored 75% Sad

After 6 months of RRT it went. Gone. Smile

He also had spinal galant reflex, ATNR, TNR you name it, he had it!

After 9 months at INPP at chester he has no RR left.

Good luck x

Thanks, does RR impact fine motor?

didldidi · 26/02/2012 20:36

Thst's brilliant bec!

Madman - there's some on YouTube which helped us remember what we were supposed to do.

I can't remember exactly, but it took a long time for the Moro reflex to disappear. Maybe 9 months?

Getting rid of it def reduced his anxiety, although we are still doing further therapy to reduce his anxiety even further.

However, we saw benefits if the RRT program very quickly. We started in the first week of the summer holidays, and by the time he went back to school, school could notice an improvement in him.

His fine motor skills improved a bit. I think they are caused by the palmar reflex not the Moro reflex. The Moro reflex causes anxiety.

We did RRT through the sound learning centre, not through a behaviour optometrist.

DS has anxiety too, will check out the sources suggested.

didldidi · 26/02/2012 20:44

Thanks Indigo - I think we're in the 'getting worse before it gets better' phase at the moment!

April:

INPP

sound learning centre

hemisphers

Are all RR therapist that are highly recommended on MN.

Becaroooo · 26/02/2012 20:58

I would recommend INPP unhesitatingly!!!

Ds1 has always had major anxiety/fear issues and was also found learning to ride his bike/scooter/swim etc hard.

Not only that, but his ability to do simple things like hold a pencil have really improved. He is much better at physical activity generally no...he has even begun to dance! Smile Obviously, it depends on what RR your child has as to the exerises they are given and how long it takes varies for each child. My ds1 was a bit unusual in that he only took 9 months to complete the programme - they usually say 12 months on average

Its so hard to believe when you are first given these exercises that they will work....I remember looking at dh and thinking "oh my god, we just paid £250 for this!!!" Smile

But....it works. It really does, or at least it did for us and for lots more posters on the MN SN board.

Good luck x

There is no doubt in my mind that the reflex integration works, we visited and did a course with a private practitioner that gave us all the excersises for our son - within 3 weeks he was trying to hold a pen to write...it was amazing....go for it!

blueShark · 27/02/2012 10:52

DS had the Moro 100 % retained last Xmas and it's down to 30% after. Year of daily exercises. His anxiety slightly reduces and he is generally a happier child.

blueShark · 27/02/2012 10:53

I think that the Moro sits at the top of the rr hierarchy hence it may take longest to inhibit and in the way of the other reflexes.

didldidi · 27/02/2012 11:05

thanks blueShark.

We are midway through VT with a BO at the moment. We are coming to the end of the RRT and I can see a big difference in DS with my own eyes. He only has a tiny bit of retained moro, but scored highly in spinal galant and a few others. He used to just a mile if you touched his back, but now i can touch it without him flinching and he actually LIKES having his back rubbed now - just amazing! We have only been doing the exercises since Christmas.

madwomanintheattic · 27/02/2012 16:55

we are finding that they are getting in the way of learning to swim - i think it must be atnr specifically, but we know she has quite a few rr. might look for a practitioner locally, i think.

mrsbaffled · 27/02/2012 17:29

If you search on youtube there are quite a lot of exercises for the specific reflexes. I guess you could try those first if you don't want to spend a lot on therapy???
