My DS is 3.9 and at preschool at an english school in the middle east. Husband is in the forces and we have another year out here. School have raised some concerns and feel he needs assessing. They have a SN teacher who is going to observe him and we have asked for speech therapist to assess him.
But then what?? We are covered by private health insurance out here but no one suitable to do a thorough assessment. From reading on here I understand that early intervention is important. So if we have to return to Uk for an assessment who do we need to see. Is it developmental paediatrican, educational psychologist?
Any one , anywhere you can recommend. thank you

At that age ideally a developmental paed, BUT the uk is pretty crap for early intervention after that. It is usually dx followed by a wave goodbye.

Investigate behaviourist interventions or ABA where you are though.

That's a tricky one, as the Paediatricians at the CDCs (Child DEvelopment Centres) around here can only see children whose GPs link into them. I'm sorry, but I've no idea how this would work when you aren't living here at the moment. I can only suggest asking the SN Teacher and SaLT there. They presumably will have dealt with situations like this before ?
Sorry I can't be more helpful.

What is ABA?
Going to see headmistress this week, its a lovely school but i need to know what they have in place, where people go for assessments. I know a lady with a 7 year son had to go back to Australia to get help with diagnosis and help with ADHD.

it depends what assessments you are after really. If you are after an assessment to get a diagnosis then you would want to see a developmental peadiatrician, in the UK you'd need a referral from your GP to see someone. If you want an assessment as to what support should be offered in school then it would be an ed psych you'd want, in the UK the school would ask one to come in to school to assess. You can also see a developmental pead and/or ed psych privately if that's an option.

Looks like we will have to come back to uk to be seen privately. Don't feel we should have to wait over a year if people are raising concerns now.
Can anyone recommend a good private developmental paed?

You need to get in touch with the children's education advisory service at upavon (all details are on the mod website, or google CEAS Upavon)

Is there an SMO or similar who provides medical care for forces personnel, even if dependants see local civilian doctors? If so, dh needs to discuss with him/her.

There is no problem with accessing local paediatrician etc, but tbh it would just be easier to return to the uk for assessment etc if necessary. Of course it would be possible to short tour and return to the uk early for welfare/compassionate if it was felt to be necessary and in the best interests of family and dc.

Who fulfils your families officer/welfare function? There will be someone, but it's not unusual for them to be a bit hidden or difficult to find. Get dh on the case.

Just seen your last post - why aren't the mod finding the paed and booking appointments and flights? (and paying for it all?)
