Getting the writing direction right

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but did see some other dyslexia posts here, posting on behalf of a friend. Her DD is 5, in year 1. Dyslexia dx has been mooted but they're not actively pursuing a statement at the moment.

One big problem is that 95% of the time, if left unprompted, she will write right-to-left, not left-to-right. This goes for both individual letters and whole sentences. She is left handed, I wondered whether that might be a factor.

Does anyone have any strategies to overcome this? Would be interested to hear your thoughts.

Left handed and in year 1 this is very normal and not a problem yet.

Just put a left to right arrow on the top of the page and keep reminding her text goes that way.

OK - thanks Indigo. Should we always correct? What about when she's playing around writing pretend notes for mum etc? I hate to correct her when she's just playing because she gets frustrated and upset about it at the best of times.

I think the teacher is a bit lax about this in school but will ask her to put arrows on top of her worksheets, I think that will definitely help.

There have been a few Threads on this in the primary board. Search for mirror writing.

Don't always correct.

But if you're doing writing with her try to get her to start at the right place.

She may well have dyslexia - but this is not particularly a symptom of it.
