Yes, TH is much cheaper than a tutor in London for one hour a week for a year.

And like I said, his hourly rate is reasonable compared to other therapists.

Becaroooo · 20/02/2012 18:48

indigo Tutor costs are truly eye watering (esp in SE) and I was doing exactly the same stuff with him at home that the tutor/dyslexia action would have done (earobics, phonics, apples and pears etc)

Am too scared to try and add up all that we have spent (not only in monetary terms) since ds1 was 5.5...I think I would cry Sad

HolyCalamityJane · 20/02/2012 19:14

Just would like to add that whilst I would love to visit Tinsley House logistically it is not possible for me but it doesn't stop me from trying my own Tinsley regime and using the reccommended supplements. I have seen an enormous improvement in my DD and the money I spend on supplements I save on wine as I don't feel the need to tuck into a bottle every night to calm myself down after a day from hell.Grin
Having read the Brain food book it all just seems like such good common sense I wish I had tried it sooner.
I found a great website called yourhealthfoodstore.co.uk to order the floradix which offers a 33% discount on your first order I made quite a substancial saving.

Becaroooo · 20/02/2012 19:19

holy I think the supplements, diet changes and exercises detailed in the brain food plan book will do nothing but good for your dd.

Its a 3 hours drive there and back for us to TH - so not that local Smile - but we are able to do it.

(you can do sessions via skype after the first 2 visits btw - thats what we will be doing...when I understand how skype works that is!!!....)

What is the difference between the Is That My Child and the Learning Disability Myth Brain Food Plan books?

IndigoBell · 20/02/2012 20:08

Ellie - the books are very similar, but the brain food plan has more specific details of the stairs exercise and what to eat, whereas Is that my child spends longer explaining the philosophy.

Everything you need for stage 1 of TH (the first 2 months) is in the brain food book.

Indigo - Chiropractic practice is not universally recognised as a 'science'. It is a form of alternative medicine. It certainly does not require a 4 year university degree.

Becaroo - it is contentious. Chiropractic therapy is now regulated but I think it is only offered at 3 private institutions rather than being a standard university course. Of course, just because you have a qualification to carry out a therapy doesn't mean that the therapy works. In that vein, you may have heard about the British Chiropractic Society's pursuit of a science writer who published an article in the Guardian about what he believed to be the overblown and unsubstantiated claims of chiropractic practice. It eventually dropped its libel action. It caused quite a stir at the time.

I hope it works for people. I would just be asking questions about the evidence base for these interventions.

appropriatelytrained · 20/02/2012 22:17

A quick google brought up this

appropriatelytrained · 20/02/2012 22:35

It appears this led to proceedings before his professional body.

ellie4 · 21/02/2012 07:06

Sorry IndigoBell I wasn't clear enough. There are two Brain Food Plan Books:
here
Thanks

IndigoBell · 21/02/2012 07:27

Ellie - I think they're the same book, one for the US and one for the UK.

You can get it from here for £3.00

IndigoBell · 21/02/2012 07:37

AT - What disturbs you about the article you linked to?

So I call neurologist Dr Robin Pauc, upon which he simply denies writing the article. He says it was written by two people from the Mail, and he had no control over it. Pauc denies ever claiming to be anything other than a chiropractic neurologist.

I would just be asking questions about the evidence base for these interventions. - that's not my approach. I have £250. I have no qualms at all about spending that on something that might help my child, and that I'm very confident will not hurt them.

In fact it's been incredibly successful with all 3 of my children.

If it hadn't helped, that wouldn't have bothered me either. I would have been able to rest easy knowing I'd done everything I could for my children.

2 years ago, when DS was in Y4, I thought he wouldn't be able to go to secondary school, I thought I'd have to HE him. Now, I'm looking foward to him starting secondary school in Sep.

1 year ago I thought DD would never ever learn to read. Now she's almost caught up with her peers.

If I'd waited for something that Ben Goldacre approved of I'd be in a very dark place right now..

Good luck with helping your child.

Very interesting thread! Can I just ask....... At the moment DD2 (4.8) has eye-Q fish oils and behaviour balance liquid.

I've just bought the floradix (magnesium and Zinc) as recommended by Indigo. Can I give both or is that too much as there is magnesium in the behaviour balance too. I don't want to over load her.

TIA

IndigoBell · 21/02/2012 21:09

How much magnesium is in BB? You need quite a lot of it.

mumgoingcrazy · 21/02/2012 21:13

Hi Indigo,

It says 30mg per serving.

TIA

HolyCalamityJane · 22/02/2012 05:50

That's a great question I had stopped using the behaviour balance in favour of the floradix it has the same quantities of zinc and magnesium as the floradix but has sweetener etc but I did wonder if I could give both?

IndigoBell · 22/02/2012 07:45

Zinc RDA is 10 - 15 mg and Magnesium for 4-8 year olds is 130 mg.

And you need to have an awful lot more than that for it to be dangerous.

So you certainly can have both BB and floradix at the same time.

BB contains an awful lot of B6. (30 x the RDA) (Which is not a dangerous amount)

BB works really well for some kids, and makes others worse.

You'll just have to see what combination works best for your kids.

mumgoingcrazy · 22/02/2012 10:30

Thank you. DD2 is doing well on the behaviour balance, so we'll see what happens when we add floradix as well!

Thanks again x

Soutty · 22/02/2012 11:29

Just checked out BB and it is really expensive. I'm wary of getting it as DS won't touch the fish oil supplement I got him and if I order BB and he won't touch it that's £50 down the drain.

Are there any supplements that are useful that taste like Calpol? I'm tempted by the Floradix but if it tastes anything like the adult version there's no way I'll get it down him.
