Well good news is that I have two dates for DS to have his second oppinion at Maudsley (big grin)

However I am getting confused (probably anxious paranoid and wary if I am honest)

DS was referred to the Autism and related disorders services and this is where his referral was accepted. HOWEVER the clinician/professor that has been assigned to DS specialises in OCD/tics and anxiety related mental disorders only from what I have researched on the net.

As most of you know I am at the other end of the world to london and this is a BIG trip for myself and DS into the unknown so to speak.

My question re CBT is that is his field does this help children? he is 6.5 now. How does it work and would be be old enough to understand how to use calming techniques? (picturing myself being an adult it would probably be easier for my age)

DS has had a clinicaly rated assessment that states ASD/Tourettes and possibly ADHD combined. No idea where the OCD comes in.

I dont want to go there for just anxiety iyswim my intention is to get all his complex needs defined. I just go this odd feeling that we may be being seen by the wrong one? Please just tell me I am being paranoid x

He also has SPD so maybe this is the anxiety bit. Been on their site and although most proffs have pictures of themselves this one doesnt which is another panic for me as I was hoping to get used to the face I was going to see. Hate not knowing what to expect. I think I need anxiety help lol.

I think you need to give them a ring and check exactly what you are being seen for and emphasise that this is a massive trip for you and you want to make sure you are seeing the right people.

6.5 is a bit young for CBT type strategies

Panik over! There are two men with the same surnames one you cant find and one you can. The secretary only gave me the surname which didnt help matters as only one shows on their website.

ooohhh the stressssssssssss

Can I ask how you managed to get referral? That's who I want to see dd1 but wading though local camhs atm

NoHaudinMaWheest · 16/02/2012 22:07

Hi coff33pot. Glad you've got your dates. Just to clarify - you have been referred to ASD team? Remember you can pm me if you want any more advice about the practicalities. Good luck.

Lisad It was via my GP who made the referral. I had already been through the local camhs route which was a total upside down mess to be honest. No one persons particular fault (first person I saw was lovely but left) just lack of staff, multi team fell apart due to someone leaving etc etc ended up with a mish mash dx outside of the pathway route, of one person saying "complex needs" another telling me to go get his hair cut and that will help concentration and throw in a couple social stories, to another saying he has so many Autistic traits its understandable why you think this way.....and another telling me if I got a dx actually defining everything they would wave goodbye anyway as they are not trained in autism etc etc

I was entitled to a second opinion as I was told but I have completely lost faith in our services to be honest and time is ticking for DS and they had already admitted honestly that they had no aftercare or experience. CAHMS wont pay for you to go outside of area for a second op, but you are entitled to go see your GP armed with as much ammo, reports to show otherwise etc and a few tears/tantrums and beg him to ask the PCT to pay for a referral elsewhere.

I am lucky to have a second chance due to a GP that listened which is rare, but worn out fighting for it and now scared to death on two counts. One is that I have no idea where I am going and who I am seeing and two is the possiblility I will commit murder if I dont walk out with some sort of sense of it all.

Also now got to go beg at the bank lol as one of the appointments is over easter so I am looking at it costing about £1500 all told with staying over twice phew!

Sounds expensive! They are supposed to be good, though.

coff33pot · 16/02/2012 23:19

thats travel plus accommodation mind. I expect it would be cheaper if it was a different time of year but one cant be fussy with this Grin

Yes, I was thinking the two trips would double the price for you. Shame they can't do it in one go. London is so bloody expensive.
