Appealing DLA Award

DS is one of 4, and is Deaf and Autistic. Doesn't speak, in nappies, very wilful, no fear, an enigma all in all. DLA award is MR Care LR Mobility. I have to check on him constantly as he climbs up furniture and has no sense of danger. Not allowed outside unless supervised, has to be restrained when near roads and cars as he will run off, can't manage stairs so is usually carried as it takes him a minute or two to get down a flight of stairs holding on with both hands. Feeding is a nightmare as he ignores cutlery and will just use his hands to eat. Very challenging at nighttime. I need to keep checking on him. We use a baby monitor still, and he is 5. He quite often will climb onto the windowsill to sleep and wakes up at least twice a night.
I need to write a report first to get them to look at it. How do I tackle this to get an increase, and what language should I use (apart from "Show me the money!)??

Download the Cerebra Guide which tells you exactly how to fill in the DLA form, and use that as a template for what language to use.

Sorry for brief reply, kids demented here...! Smile

cerebra guide is fab. always stress how much more help/support/supervision etc you DS needs in comparison to an NT child.

also, if you do not get the rate you think you should, then ask for a reconsideration and if need appeal. We just got turned down, got turned down on reconsideration and only got DLA on appeal. happens to a lot of people. persevere!

We are doing the reconsideration as they advised that we do this first and then appeal. Did you submit reports from Paed and SLT or dud you hold those back for appeal?

I would send in whatever you have. you can appeal nevertheless. I did not have anything to add when we appealed but they changed their decision nevertheless. I think they just took the piss (sorry) when they turned us down twice (DD is 4, has autism little speech, nappies and tons of related issues).

All I really want is a Blue Badge, but where my LA is concerned unless he is blind and/or without legs forget it! Wish they would try my life out for size!

make sure you are being clear how long up in night and how many times - look at cerebra. HRC is basically same as middle rate care except with the night waking as well.
