There is always something. Before it was licking and pouring. Now its obsessive ripping. We havea zero tolerance approach since he ripped up £25 ofcourse he doesnt understand the value. Anyway its driving me crazy Ive tried distraction, weve told him its naughty but he doesnt stop. Unless he ismeating he is ripping. Does anyone else have a ripper? What can I do?

The other thing is toilet training we can not get him to poo on the toilet. He is weeing on the toilet pretty well but will not poo. He is holding for days and getting constipation as a result.

Ds is 6 has severe ASD he has very limited understanding.

Poo _ let it go while you treat constipation. Gp should prescribe lactulose and something stronger if needed.

With us the trick was spotting a poo pattern. Ds only pooed at night when he had a nappy on. We realised he was pooing within 15 mins of going to bed

So in a period of time when he was not constipated we started getting him up after 10 mins sitting him on toilet and literally holding choc buttons under his nose.

After a few weeks this became his routine and we stop the buttons
After a few months he started asking for a wee and doing poos in the day if at home.
Was v slow incremental progress and ds is still in night pants cos he doesn't think to alert us if he needs to go at night but that is the next stage . . .

Ripping paper is a problem for us too. If I could be bothered I'd try pasting a photo of ds on a big box and putting lots of scrap paper for ds to scribble on or rip in there and keep it always in his reach. as it I just shout which obviously doesn't work Blush

We also have a ripper and a pourer. I have just ended up hiding stuff all over the place but have no solutions really. It is definitely v annoying.

Def need to treat the constipation first...lactulose or movicol.

DS, also 6, rips up all his books, even his absolute favourite - You Choose - is in pieces this week, can't understand it really, he's high functioning.

Have been recommended to get a box full of old books that he can rip up to his heart's content. So maybe a similar 'ripping' box for your DS

We tried the letting him rip approach but he cant distinguish between what he is allowed to rip and what he isnt. He will start anywhere and hes quick so its usually too late to redirect him. What we are working on is fetting him interested in cinstructive things but he isnt really interested in anything at the moment.

i will try the chocolate on the toilet thanks.

Ripping is a good way of getting the measure of different materials isn't it? My Nt DD has just had a ripping phase (fortunately no cash). She's now moved on to sellotaping. Maybe in his own way your ds is trying to get creative. Could you find lots of different things to rip eg, corrugated cardboard, old sheets, cotton wool, masking tape, an onion, food packaging etc?
