Has anyone been successful in getting a Blue Badge? DS is deaf and Autistic. Getting DLA MR Care and LR Mobility. He is unpredictable and a danger in carparks etc. My LA don't recognise ASD as a disability so any good tips as to how to successfully tackle LA, please??

Sallybear, I will PM you later - remind me if you don't hear from me by tomorrow - on my phone right now and it's a pain writing a proper post but I have experience of this from LA side x

Ok. My knowledge of this is a couple of years old but I a friend was a manager processing blue badges at one point and had an application like this.

Basically it is possible for the LA to give it, see here oldmankelv.awardspace.co.uk/blueBadge1.html but they generally speaking will point to the rules which say that the blue badge is awarded for a mobility problem, not a behavioural one.

However, if you can get a paediatrician or other doctor to write a letter which states that your child has a condition which manifests itself in such a way as to cause an inability to walk or difficulty walking then the LA can award the badge. My - er - friend rang up the child's paediatrician (who kept sending in letters about behavioural problems and therefore kept getting the badge turned down) and explained this. He sent in a fax explaining the difficulty walking and lo and behold the LA found it was able to award the badge.

You may need to keep ringing the LA till you find a sympathetic manager who is willing to talk to a doctor in order to get the right words written down, iyswim.

Thank you Goldengreen. Any help at all, is gratefully received!! I am determined to get one, as it will give me peace of mind knowing I can get him in and out of a carpark safely.

Our messages must have crossed Goldengreen! Thank you for the info sheet, I will write a letter and send it to my paediatrician to get her to write something favourable. Fingers crossed!

I spoke to the DLA yesterday, as we were given our renewal last week. We still get MR Care and NOW get LR Mobility. I told them that I felt that I should have been getting HR Care & Mobility. They have asked me to write a more detailed report to reconsider our award, but felt that as DS is able bodied we won't get HR Mobility. I am going to approach the NAS for help writing this report and my application for a Blue Badge. I fear that I may become a massive Thorn in their Side!!
