After seeing a SALT with my dd 2 and being told she had a significant communication disorder she also recommended seeing a nutritional therapist.
I have recently done this and one of the things she suggested was flax seed oil once a day on top of food as a really good way of getting more omega 3 into little ones which she said its really proving to be making a differences in these circumstances. I have started doing it as of yesterday, Just wondering if anyone had any experience of this please?

Your child almost certainly needs more Omega 3 - but I really wouldn't be getting it from flaxseed. You need it from fish.

I'm fairly sure Omega from flaxseed does not contain EPA.

I recommend Vegepa because it is high in EPA and contains no DHA.

I have had huge success with Vegepa, and also zinc, magnesium and B6.

Sorry what is EPA? Dd does eat fish aswell, she is actually quite a good eater+eats most foods but I thought that was a good way to get a bit more into her diet...may have to rethink that now. U mentioned zinc, mag+B6, these are also things the salt mentioned, du know any particular foods that are high in these pls? Have these improved concentration levels in your experience?

Lots of us on here use Behavior Balance which can be ordered online it is full of zinc, magnesium and B6 and B12. It doesn't work for everyone but lots of us have seen massive improvements. It is an easy way to get these into your DC without having to radically change their diet. I did try and get Flaxseed oil but couldn't find it but I was only going to get it as a bonus on top of the Omega 3 and 6 capsules I give my DD.
Indigo is an expert on all these things and has given me brilliant advice on her recommendation I ordered the book "Is that my child, The brain food plan" by doctor Robert Pauc it is really helpful and tells you what you should and shouldn't be feeding your child. Definitely worth a look.

Hi thanx holy I will look at behaviour balance and the brain food plan book, that sounds really good thanx, I'm up for trying anything that could potentially help my dd even a bit. I had the flaxseed oil from holland+barret+it doesn't taste of anything so its perfect to put on food, my dd is a bit young for capsules yet but I'm a bit concerned now about it not containing EPA (not that I know wot that is) but sounds like its not quite as good as I thought??

I have just googled behaviour balance, it seems to be around £20 a bottle, does that sound right to you or am I looking in wrong place? That's fine just don't want to pay £20 if Its cheaper on another site?

That sounds right Oso. I got it from a site called detox people (a mum on here told me about that site) it arrive fairly sharpish. My DD too young to swallow or chew the capsules too so I cut them open and mix those with a spoonful of the behavior balance into a very small shot of ribena and my DD necks it back every morning I also give her one of those fruit gummy multi vitamins.
I have totally over hauled her diet wholemeal bread, fish twice a week protein for breakfast etc etc and the difference has been amazing.

Good luck would love to hear how you get on x

Behaviour Balance is expensive. (Although yes, lots of people on here rave about it.)

I've gone with Osteocare for Zinc and Magnesium and a normal multi vitamin for B6.

As Holy says The Brain Food Plan explains it all a bit more.

Omega 3 contains EPA, DHA, and ALA. According to the Brain Food Plan the bit of Omega 3 you need is the EPA. There have been loads and loads and loads of studies to find out if Omega 3 helps, and apparently the ones with the best results contained the most EPA.....

Sorry to hijak slightly but I have been giving DS these which are entirely made from seeds as he is allergic to fish and eggs (also all nuts and sesame) which are the main dietary sources.
Does anyone have any thoughts on whether or not these are the most effective ones for our situation?
We also supplement with a multivitamin and mineral too.

cjn27b · 30/01/2012 11:21

We have a fish allergy and communication disorder, so I to would be very interested in supplements that have EPA but aren't made of fish oil!

I think there's one made from algae that MooseMamma uses, but I can't find it at the moment.....

IndigoBell · 30/01/2012 11:42

This is the one Moose uses.

I know it's helped her and her (vegeterian) family a lot.
