Found a great product for children that can't tie laces

I am probably way behind and you all already know about these, but anyway.

Greeper sports laces

These are just what I've been looking for for ds1. His feet are at that size where it starts getting harder to find velcro shoes and trainers. We can still get some at the moment, but have a lot less choice than we used to and I'm sure eventually we're going to struggle. Also, most of his friends now have laced school shoes and trainers/football boots and he wants to be like them.

We have tried and tried to teach him how to tie laces, but he gets himself in a terrible muddle - not to mention his laces in a huge knot.

They aren't cheap compared to traditional laces, but they're not so expensive as to be not worth considering, iyswim.

Anyway, I just thought I'd share them with you all.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend. Smile

Thanks! [smile ]

Talking to myself here I know. Blush

Just thought I should say, that they are designed for athletes, triathletes and runners etc, so not for SNs, which makes them more acceptable to peers.

Having just watched the video again, I think I might get some for myself first to try them out, as I hate fiddling with my laces before every workout. Then if they do the trick I'll invest in some for the boys.

They look fab, thanks OP

Cross posted Sauvignon! Blush

You are welcome raffle.

Just had a look at some of the other options there were videos for on Youtube and apparently you can get something called race locks that do a similar job and there are cheaper versions of the Greepers around that are just called elastic sports laces.

Dd3 has the elastic ones in her high tops, they are really good and make them easier to get on and off too.

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 28/01/2012 19:56

Locklaces are also good. Very hard finding cheap Velcro football boots for secondary, so these do the trick. In fact, Velcro shoes full stop get harder to find in big sizes.

unpa1dcar3r · 28/01/2012 20:33

What a brilliant idea Moose. Very handy to know thank you Smile

Ineedalife · 28/01/2012 20:35

Yay ellen those are exactly what Dd3 has, the podiatrist suggested them to me and they are fabSmile.

Bought ours off ebay.

SweetGrapes · 28/01/2012 20:44

Thanks. They look fab! It's getting difficult to find velcro shoes for dd too now. Smile

For Velcro trainers in big sizes..go to Soccer World:)

My son is nearly 15, and 6 ft with size 11 feet..and needs a size 12 to get his splints in... and can't do laces!! Fila and Londsdale both do decent ones (in black for school too)

If my son gets any bigger however we are STUFFED Grin

Hassled · 28/01/2012 21:48

Thanks for this - I have a 13 year old Dyspraxic DS2 who takes about 10 minutes to tie his shoelaces and it's painful to watch.

lisad123 · 28/01/2012 21:52

I could kiss you!!

moosemama · 28/01/2012 22:10

Thank you for that as well Medusa.

Definitely worth bearing in mind if ds1 decides he doesn't like the look of the laces - which knowing ds1 is perfectly possible. Hmm Grin

It would save people a lot of time and heartache if OTs etc knew about these products and recommended them to parents.

Ds1 was nearly in tears trying to put his basketball boots on at our friends house last week - hence me googling for something to help. They have zips and he just tucks in the laces rather than doing them up, but he still couldn't do it without getting in a massive tangle. Didn't help that her neighbour was there and said 'loudly' to me "Isn't he a bit old to be struggling with his laces?" Angry You can just imagine what sort of reply he got from me!

Just ordered two pairs off Ebay for a bit under £17. In black, ideal for normal shoes.

coff33pot · 29/01/2012 22:09

oohhh! great idea thanks Moosemama. DS pulls his velcro ones so tight and keeps doing it repetatively when he is stressed so they snap and its costing me a bomb in new shoes! That will give me more freedom of choice and he can strangle his feet instead Grin

alison222 · 30/01/2012 11:42

Timberland trainers had similar fastenings on them DS loved them, but we now have a problem with track suit bottoms as he is so skinny he needs to be able to tie a bow on these. I can help first thing in the morning - but if he needs to go to the toilet he needs to be able to do them himself. Learning is such a slow process. He shouts at the laces!!! The OT showed him how to tie the original knot and add an extra loop to keep it tight so that if the bow was slack it would still be ok. BUT the bow tying is still proving very difficult.

troutpout · 30/01/2012 16:13

They look good
I usually replace ds's (14) laces with black elastic ones...turns his school shoes into slip ons.
Those look trendy though... He might go for them in trainers where they don't stand out too much and where the thin elastic ones I use do.
Cheers

IndigoBell · 30/01/2012 16:18

There's also these No tie laces

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 30/01/2012 16:27

I've got some of the no tie laces, Indigo. They do work but are a bit bulky and they do stand out, rather. I like the ones linked above because they look like 'NT' laces!

CMOTDibbler · 30/01/2012 16:30

I have the locklaces in my trainers as they are dead easy to get on one handed. They are lasting really well too
