ladders for beds?

DS bed has had it completely. He has fallen through it by continuously bouncing and slats have all broken now. DH has "fixed" it twice but in all fairness this solid wood bed has had use for last 11 years lol including accommodating DD in her teens when we swapped rooms over so its past its sell by date!

His room is small and DH and I have had an idea that if we assemble two melamine kitchen units and put them either end facing each other and put a cabin bed on top (obviously secured!) we would have drawers for his clothes in the bed and he will be able to go underneath and a) have access to toys in the cupboards and b) I am going to make a Tent front out of a duvet he likes the picture off so he can hide under the bed with cushions for a quiet area when he is stressed as I thought I could rig up some soft neon lighting or something underneath the middle of the bed. It will be small but DS likes small areas :) Kind of a do it yourself mid sleeper. Then he would have a 9ft by 3ft runner down his room to also play on. However we have a ladder issue as cant find one that has to fit on the side of the cabin bed and also any bed guards I am searching are only good for slatted or divans.

Anyone got any ideas?

Should have put also a bed guard query in the main title lol DS is 6.5 but he will still need a guard of some sorts as he will be just over 1.5 metre from the floor!

Grin DD used to have a high sleeper! and yes it was a masterful act on my part to make it lol!

DS likes helping me make his bed. He likes to lose and arm or leg in the elastic on the sheets so I have to pretend to find lumps after!

Glad you mentioned about bedwetting and lights! I forgot that! We are going to get a waterproof mattress but spill drinks and such could still post probs! Lantern lights are a great idea :)

Issue with attaching to cupboard then upwards is the beds I have seen have drawers either end with shelving space in the middle? and so we would be blocking off two drawers one end. ALSO this contraption just fits between wall and door frame and there is window the other end so no wall space to put a side ladder.... Cant put it the other side as this is the door entrance. Its one of those 9ft by 6.5 ft ish box rooms which are useless! all door and window!

Going to hunt ikea site though as didnt think of them :)

Remember with the bed guard to make it either solid or with very small gaps. Homemade bed guards with a large gap are a choking/accidental hanging risk as a child can slip their body through but not their head. Sorry to come across all Health and Safety!

Argos has a low cabin bed in their sale for £99 - would give you some storage without ladder risks. I don't know how you are for cash but to me it seems a safer option. With a slim mattress the sides are high enough to stop a kid falling out. Haven I thnk it's called.

A really cheap 2 man tent from the Jan sales could be cut up and adapted to fit over the top, or IKEA do a tent fitting. Solar powered fairy lights coudd be rigged around it to give some soft lighting.

Very have a cabin bed with wardrobe, desk etc on sale for £199. Don't want to stop all your DIY fun but by the time you have paid for all the bits and pieces....or one with just drawers for £100. For the dearer one alot of reviewers seem to leave the back off the wardrobe and use it as a hiding place with fairy lights etc

Thanks all :) Was as work today so only just saw replies!

The Haven one in Argos was the one I was going to get and fit on top secured both to wall and rim surround (sounds odd I know but this bed would have fitted wall to wall the room is that small). BUT they have none in stock of any colour at the moment. Gone through all internet yesterday too.

However DH has a masterplan of buying the melamine and doing it himself. He has built fitted wardrobes and made wood drawers etc for our room as no wall in our house is the same shape or measurement so it has to be made to fit iyswim. He has worked out from measurements for exactly the same as the Haven bed the whole thing would actually cost £56! plus blood sweat and tears LOL. I have told him to build the one end with bedguard in so it is higher and put peep holes in like zzzz suggested :) Also because he is doing it himself like he said he can make it solid by having the bed ends down to the floor fitted over the back of the units at the bottom to the back and either end into the wall, so no way it would budge.

Ladder sorted too! enough room one end to build ladder to wall and I am now thinking of having a sort of firemans pole at the oposite end purely for DS enjoyment if we can get one that sort of height Grin
