I've been in low-level chats for last year or so, as I think there is something going on - my hunch was ADHD inattentive. But yesterday ds's teacher brought up dyslexia as a possibility & is recommending they test him (which is fine - all up for checking out any options). But I'm struggling to find any useful diagnostic stuff online, so wondered if anyone was around to help me think this through?
I think there are two main areas of concern:
- concentration: tends to mentally 'wander off' - so for example will struggle with 2/3 step instructions, will loose track mid-sentence, won't 'hear' things even when repeated, to his face, whilst looking at you (hearing test came back fine)
- struggles to get things on paper - partly this seems to be organisational (ordering sentence/working out what to write next) & partly handwriting based (still regularly reverses b, d and 6 pretty much every time unless specifically thinking; often reverses other numbers; 'normal' sentence will have at least 4 crossings out; handwriting very chaotic; struggles to remember sentence & spelling rules when writing, despite knowing them; writes VERY little.
BUT he is voracious reader (& one of the most proficient in his class) which makes me struggle with the idea of dyslexia. Or am I dealing with an outdated idea of what dyslexia means?
Can anyone point me in the way of online diagnostic lists/talk to me about whether this all sounds consistent from your knowledge?
TIA!
