hi all. My baby spent 10 days in nicu because of birth asphyxia and meconium aspiration. He's now 9 weeks and I'm in love with him. However I'm scared in case there are long term effects. We won't know this until he reaches milestones. But what should a 9 week old be doing developmentally? Sometimes I'm really positive other times I'm really protective of him and worry! Please help me deal with this!

Hi there - I would suggest you talk to your paediatrician for more information here or if that is not possible the health visitor. I would hope they are keeping a close eye on him due to this difficult start to his life and they should be there for you too and helping you to understand what it is you should be looking out for, doing and when to be in touch. . No personal experience of this so I can't give you any personal story to help make you feel more positive but maybe others can come along who will, but I hope everything turns out well.

Hi - sorry to hear about your baby's rough start to life. Did he have an MRI and was he cooled? It is hard not to be worried but I'm glad you are bonding with him so well.

There are a few of us on here with HIE babies - my dd is now 4 yrs old and had HIE grade II and brain injury at birth due to placental abruption. She was in NICU for 2 weeks and has been delayed with physical milestones but doing very well with everything else. At 9 weeks she had only just started smiling - she had been very sleepy at first due to the medication for her seizures. There is an excellent FB site for HIE babies if you haven't found it yet (Hope for HIE).

Glad he got the cooling - can make a huge difference to outcome. Hope you don't have to wait much longer for the MRI results. Yes dd walks and talks but does find some physical things and fine motor skills a bit more of a challenge than her peers. Still better than her initial outcome though!
