Interesting.

I remember someone on this board using the metaphor of a spider's web, which I found to be much easier to understand than spectrum.

Oh that was me!

Can't remember what name I was using then but I'm glad you found it useful. I don't often post useful stuff Grin

originally, the DSM overhaul was going to try to include looking at ASDs as less of a spectrum, and more of a 3D model - I htink they wanted a spherical model, with points (ie specific difficulties like APD, or sensory, or language difficulties) fluid both across the surface and between the surface and the core (if that makes sense) - to indicate both need and severity of need.

but that has all been chucked out, in favour of just lumping it all together unde rone tighter heading (can't really see how that is going to help many people)

Some of the , not really alternative, issues which may be considered individual issues which are part of the wider ballpark.
Apraxia of Speech
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)
Deficits in Attention, Motor control, and Perception (DAMP)
Hyperacusis
Hyperlexia
Impulse Control Disorders
Pragmatic Language Impairment (PLI)
Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome
Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)
Specific Language Impairment (SLI)
Speech Sound Disorders (SSD)

There are more but these may the issues some need to be looking at.
