One week to get ds eating with cutlery not hands

He has an assessment for a school we very much want to accept him. The school have some 'standards'. This is one.

They are not used to inclusion. But the HT is fab and whilst reluctant, explained why which made a lot of sense (had a lot to do with not wanting any so called experts from the LA anywhere near his school - lol). He has read ds' reports so it isn't going to be a shock, - in fact I'm hoping it will be a nice surprise because his reports are depressing whilst he is a happy smiley child not yet ruined by the SEN education system.

But, - his eating skills are ferral and if I can't sort them, I'd like fast track improvements if anyone has any ideas.

Many TIA.

Ahhh, will have to try American pancakes and syrup. He loves MacDonalds Pancake but actually thinks nothing of fingers. Might be able to bribe him to eat them with cutlery. Will try this weekend :)

Can I just suggest something that might seem a bit mad?

Have you tried plastic cutlery rather than metal? DS2 hates metal cutlery and I find he eats more civilised with plastic cutlery. We have the sets from Ikea and I usually take one with me when we are eating out.

Good luck with the school.

We had success with Tagteach but Ds2 just reverted back to fingers as soon as we stopped. So recently we've been building up - started with four bites and now on 9. We went up very slowly - added one bite a week. When he has finished the allotted number with the fork we just stop prompting and make no comment at all if he uses his fingers. Just this week he's started using the fork after the 9 bites Smile He uses a spork - cant cope wth more than one piece of cutlery atm as his fine motor skills are pretty bad.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll try them all including the American pancakes. Grin
